HELP... new to RTW process!
Hey Gang,
Sorry if I am asking silly or elementary questions... I have to go to Shanghai, Xiamen, Bombay and Goa in December... think a RTW would be cheaper... I will be in business class. Thinking about trying to add AKL on the return... Is this itiniery even possible? How would I find costs? Thanks in advance... William |

Asking this question here is like going to a Wine Spectator exhibition and asking if anyone minded terribly tasting the bottle of Opus One you had brought along. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Bread and butter, thats what it is to us, bread and butter. Anyway, as a first stab, how about this routing: roc-jfk, jfk-fra, fra-bom, (bom-goi-bom), bom-sin, sin-pvg, (sha-xmn-sha), pvg-nrt, nrt-akl, akl-jfk, jfk-roc The ones in parentheses would need to be done separatel;y from the RTW as these cities (i.e. Goa and Xiamen) are not served by Star carriers. The flight distances and prices for these flights are so small it will be a very minor thing to do anyway. The rest of the routing could see you on UA/LH to FRA, to BOM on LH, to SIN and then PVG on SQ, to NRT on NH, to AKL on NZ, back home again on NZ/UA. Total miles: 28,676 so you can do a 29,000 Star RTW and have 324 miles to play with as well. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif Anyway, it sounds like a blast, and if you find yourself in NRT with a layover, be sure to drop a note. Thanks for the response... Another question... do I have to continue in one direction for the RTW ticket? I have to do Shanghai, Xiamen, Bombay and Goa in that order... so not sure if I can even do it. Thanks again. William |

Ah a challenge. hmmmm..... One choice would be... ROC-JFK. JFK-FRA, FRA-PVG, (SHA-XMN), XMN-BKK, BKK-BOM, (BOM-GOI-BOM), BOM-SIN, SIN-AKL, AKL-LAX, LAX-JFK, JFK-ROC ...for a total of 30,262 miles.Downside (or is it an upside actually?) is that you would need the 32,000 miles version of the RTW and would have to creatively find 1738 miles worth of side trips so as to not waste the available mileage. It may be cheaper to think about grabbing a dirt cheap ticket in BKK R/T to BOM and not including that mileage in the RTW. You could easily get away withj a 29.000 mile RTW ticket then and would in fact still have about 2000 miles worth of side trips to play with then as well. In this second scenario, you could have the following routing (as far as the RTW were concerned): ROC-JFK. KFK-FRA, FRA-PVG, (SHA-XMN), XMN-BKK, BKK-SIN, SIN-AKL, AKL-LAX, LAX-JFK, JFK-ROC In both cases above the segments in parentheses are not included in the RTW and are purchased individually. I think either scenario will work, but someone else may have better info on the viability of the inclusion of the segments to India and back thereby creating an itinerary which doubles back on itself. As India is, I believe, considered the same region as SIN and BKK, you should be fine though. A quick call to the local TG or SQ rep will answer that question though. From what I can see from your itinerary, a RTW is not your option and your best bet is to check with a travel agent who will be able to construct a routing for you that will cover those destinations. |
