Can you reserve them on any * A carrier?

No - the rules vary from carrier to carrier (and from frequent flier program to frequent flier program).

So you must be the first to check-in ?!
Are there any rules for the earliest check-in? E.g. could I check-in today for a flight in one month?

NH allows reservation of emergency exit rows, but only the ones on the left side of the plane.

Other carriers, I'm not sure but I think they usually like to see you at checkin and see whether you're fit for the seat.

But AFAIK there is no restriction on bulkhead seats or first rows of Y behind the partition (although I highly advise against the first row behind the partition-they usually have very limited legroom compared to exit rows)

UA allows booking of exit-row seats to 1P and 1K members in it's FF program (ie: UA*G), however I do not know if that translates to other carriers' *G members or not - it may well do as *G's are allowed to sit in UA's Y+ section, so it is likely the same kind of computer logic at work there.

I've been able to get exit row seats out of AN, but no idea if that wa dumb luck, or *G status.

For eco+ on UA *S is enough. They would not give me an exit row so.

Never been able to get an exit row preassigned on United as BD or LH *G in several years of trying! I'm not sure if this is an "official" policy or not, any time I've asked the agent just said they weren't available.

Getting to the airport early does not mean you will get emergency exit rows. Someone who is flying in from another destination may beat you to it. And no, you cannot check-in for a flight months in advance.

SQ will pre-assign an exit row seat if available, but will not tell you which one until you check in. Koala

United we're happy to give me exit row's in E+ (not that the extra legroom is an issue here) on both my LAX-IAD thurs and the ORD-SFO yesterday as a LH FTL.

Since making Premier Exec on UA, the exit row seats suddenly became "available" on ual.com reservation seating charts, both for domestic and international. As a lowly Premier, only the green E+ were there. Booking the aisle or window seat also seems to block off the middle seat, until the plane checks in full.

Usually I try my best to pre-assign an Exit seat (allowed on NH), but last time I had only booked a week before departure during the summer peak so I was barely able to get the seats, let alone seat assignments.

I was flying ICN-NRT-LHR-NRT-ICN, and couldn't find a seat that I liked to pre-assign on the LHR-NRT segment. So I asked the checkin agent at NRT if she could leave a note to LHR asking for an Exit Aisle seat for the LHR-NRT flight and she happily agreed.

So I was rather pleasantly surprised when I reached LHR (rather unexpectedly late due to the "reliable" British trains->barely an hour before departure) and they told me they had indeed gotten me an Exit Aisle seat, my favourite one too! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Conclusion: If you can't get an assignment, you can still put in a request and, if you're lucky, they will fulfill it.
