SR to join *A ???

There are rumors that SR is going to join *A or oneworld after the management has undergone a "slight" change. In one Swiss paper there was even a (forged) picture of an SR plane w/ * A logo painted on its back. Any facts?

sjharte Jan 24, 2001 6:35 am

Surely SR are more wedded to AA than UA at the moment?

akayama Jan 24, 2001 7:40 am

No facts or official announcements. But oneworld is the most likely candidate. SR and LH in the same boat - that would be too much for the Swiss as well as the EU.

Does *A really need another Western European carrier? They've got two already!

I wouldn't call BD a "Western European Carrier". http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
If SR were to join, what would happen with SN? I suspect they would be part of the package as well.

What about SK?

LordLuck Jan 24, 2001 9:43 am

SN is being vampirised by SR, all the profitable parts being sold to SR, leaving SN as an empty and bankrupt shell...that was SR's strategy, wasn't it ?

Qualiflyer's partners include AA and CX, all in OW.

What about SK?

Lets define:
BD as Western Europe
LH, AUA as Middle Europe
SK as Northern Europe ...

Why?

SR Holding may 'spinn off' (some) airline activities and it is possible (but far away from a made deal) that LH will be THE new airline partner (bringing than SR into Mileage Plus and StarAlliance) as LH 'forced the Austrian Airlines-Group into Star.
And for the counting: So far, the follwing European Airlines are StarAliance members:

Austrian Airlines
British Midland
Lauda Air
Lufthansa
Scandinavian Airlines
Tyrolian

RichardMEL Jan 24, 2001 8:39 pm

So we obviously need an Eastern European airline in Star to cover everything. Thankfully SU is going to SkyTeam, and they're welcome to them. Less thamkfully LO is firmly in the noworld(tm) camp. I suppose there is always Tarom who I am sure make most UA Sh*ttle flights seem like SQ First http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

1) There is no need for *A to accept SR as a member, since LH and SR have almost the same international network.

2)The Sair Group (SR, LX,...) is currently making huge losses. Will SR still exist in two years...?

Rudi Jan 25, 2001 6:17 am

The SR Group (leaded by worldwide catering activities) makes resanoble overall profits - it is (only) the airlines (except SR and Crossair) that prouduce losses.

kempis Jan 25, 2001 9:30 am

My guess is that SR will NOT join the * Alliance. How many Europan airlines is needed and what do you think the European Union will say about it?

Rudi Jan 25, 2001 5:34 pm

Switzerland is still NOT a member of the European Community (and, together with the Vatican, also the only two countries NOT being in the United Nations).

Village Idiot Jan 25, 2001 6:09 pm

why not look to add a Middle East airline or a African instead of another European?

bernie Jan 26, 2001 12:22 am

Hmmmm ... SR would bring Sabena in .... with many routes into Africa

RichardMEL Jan 26, 2001 2:16 am

SA or EK for * over another euro crarrier, IMHO.

IMHO, the only reasonable alliance choice for SR would be oneworld, given that they are already codesharing with:

AA
CX
QF
AY
and Aer Lingus on the BSL-DUB route...

Gaucho100K Jan 27, 2001 9:01 am

I would like SR to join *A.... more airlines mean more frequencies, and I cant see SR lowering the average service on Star Alliance... Rudi, how is SR in International Business Class??

doc Mar 12, 2001 9:21 am

Observers generally expect that SairGroup will sooner or later join either the Oneworld airline alliance led by British Airways and American Airlines or Lufthansa's Star alliance.

If we take UA as the *A average service, I agree it's difficult to lower http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Took SR sometimes because of the youth fare out of ZRH, always economy. Recaro seats, friendly service and the best airline food ever: all organic (but the Mövenpick ice cream).

Ah, I'll love them in *A. Actually, I may even move to OW if they do so. Imagine Swissair and Cathay under same alliance, with 100% AA bouns miles... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
