UNITED AIRLINES PRESS RELEASE

CHICAGO, October 15, 1999 -- On the occasion of the official welcome ceremony of ANA into Star Alliance, and the announcement of Singapore Airlines that it will join the global partnership next year, the Chief Executive Officers of the member airlines expressed their unanimous support for Air Canada's efforts to remain an independent and strong partner.

"Air Canada, one of the world's premiere airlines and a launch carrier of Star Alliance, plays an integral role in our drive to provide our customers with unprecedented global reach and seamless service," said Jan Stenberg, President and CEO of SAS, on behalf of all of the airlines' CEOs. "We stand together in full support of the actions taken by our partner, and will take whatever steps necessary, including making a financial commitment, to protect the interest of our partnership and its customers."

PremEx - SA is South African Airways! You mean SQ?

He means Star Alliance.

Ah the problem with code words! SA in Mexico means a business like Ltd. in Canada. Or it means South America.

On reading it, I thought it meant South Africa (the country). *A is a neat abbreviation for Star Alliance. As a related question, do the alliances need formal designator codes, like individual airlines?

Good idea James! Sorry about the confusion there. I did mean SA=Star Alliance. Will use *A from now on.
