Using MileagePlus Miles

I am looking to use my MileagePlus Miles for four business class tickets from IAD to Toulouse this summer. There is availability on United on the outbound but not on the return. A frequent flyer friend of mine, who flies Air Canada and Lufthansa, tells me that he sees availability on the outbound and return with Air Canada and also with Lufthansa when he is logged into both those sites. I only have miles with United; should I not be able to use my United MileagePlus Miles with Star Alliance partners and if so how?

Thanks.

Yes you can use your UA miles to book award travel on other *A carriers if there is availability.
You have a couple of choices: pick up the phone and call UA and/or look on Expert Flyer and see what availability there is and then call.
AC and LH have different award travel availability for members of their FFPs, so the fact there is space for AC and LH members doesn't mean there is for UA.

Sometimes the United website will give you better availability if you split up the itinerary when searching. For instance try IAD-FRA/BRU, then FRA/BRU-TLS.

Thank you for your responses. I did not know about Expert Flyer and will sign up.
