Adding infant to biz class reward seat

Hello everyone -

I just finished booking two business class seats on a combination of Lufthansa and Thai Airways flights using United miles. I was quoted approximately $1,300 (US) by United to add our infant as a lap child. Any recommendation as to whether I can negotiate a lower fare for my infant? Would it possibly be cheaper to pay the infant fare through the actual airlines I'm flying versus United? In one particular flight segment (HKG to KBV one-way), the going business class ticket was $600 and United wants to charge me $450 for the lap child. That's definitely not 10%. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Raj

The fare is calculated as 10% of the Base Fare + Fuel Surcharge and Taxes at 100%. Nowadays most airlines have made the base fare very low and surcharge and taxes high and hence you are seeing the difference of 450 vs 600

Some combinations in miles will cost a fortune with money as they are not combinable .(only with miles) especially if you are flying with one airline and returning with the other .
These things should be planned in advance and the infant should be booked as early as possible. As they will check current fare and if the flight is full the will calculate it from the highest fare .

Thank you for your responses. My initial booking had an interesting combination of flights and the infant fare was quoted at $2,100. I was able to modify the dates and get better flights which resulted in the reduced, albeit still high, infant fare of $1,300.

You will likely need to stick to the same airline for a lower infant fare. I have an infant and do this regularly, but stick to the same airline for the entire routing as much as possible.
