Minimizing taxes (fuel surcharge etc.) HELP

Hi there,

I am flying YYZ-BKK-LHR-YYZ (staying in BKK and LHR for about 10 days each) and tried to book a flight on Aeroplan points (75 000 pts) and the taxes were a whopping $1200.00!

What is the best way to minimize these taxes? Is it related to specific airlines? Is it helpful to take extra stop-overs?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

The vast majority of those $1200 are not taxes, but fuel surcharges (or now called "carrier admin. fee"). Aeroplan has recently started to add these fuel surcharges on awards for flights on most, but not all airlines.

Do a search for "fuel surcharges" in the AC forum and youŽll find dozens (or actually hundreds) of threads discussing this topic.

You wonŽt be hit with fuel surcharges on LX, US, UA, TK, NZ and a few other airlines, so you could do a routing like YYZ-LAX(UA)-NRT(UA)-BKK(UA)-ZRH(LX)-YUL(LX)-YYZ(AC) and buy a separate ticket ZRH-LHR r/t in order to save taxes (as the UK government charges exorbitant taxes for longhaul flight, particularly in C/F)

Your route is quite easily doable with UA/US/TK/LX/CA - use those to avoid scamcharges (NOT TAXES!)
