Newark TO Johannesburg

Hi,
Hopefully I'm in the right forum...I'm booking EWR to JNB for April, probably connecting in Europe and I'm look for the best Star Alliance carrier for the Europe to JNB legs. Will probably be booking via UA/CO.
Seems like South African, Lufthansa and Swiss are the options. Any opinions on who stands out as the best in Economy? Other than the fact that Lufthansa has A380 service from FRA, I don't know if any of the options stands out amongst the others. FYI, I'm United Platinum/Star Alliance Gold.

Thanks!

Swiss is probably your best bet in terms of service quality, but many prefer the overall quieter, smoother and more interesting experience offered by an A380 (and the tickets tend to be a bit cheaper).

I think that all the carriers listed have AVOD, or in screen seats.

You may wish to avoid or research the fact that many LH tickets book into 50% mile categories if this is a factor.

Another option for an interesting stopover is a revenue ticket UA to Brazil, then a second ticket to JNB on TAM. Aircraft not as nice but you get a stop in Brazil. I have seen examples on this forum for two separate tickets for about the same price as one through Europe.

The GRU to JNB would be on SA and not TAM.

Going out the EWR to JNB via Europe will leave you a long layover in either LHR (UA/CO connecting to SA), MUC (UA/CO, LH connecting to SA), FRA (UA/CO, LH connecting to LH,SA), or ZRH (UA/CO, LX connecting to LX). I have done both LHR and FRA but I have lounge access which makes it a little more tolerable. I am going via ZRH in May.

Would this be in Y, C, or F? Unless you want a layover in Europe the easiest is EWR-IAD-JNB (stop in DKR but you stay on the plane) or going to JFK opens up JFK-JNB and other *A options.

Out of JFK, you may also connect through IST on TKY. Along with what the previous poster mentioned, you can also add EZE to the list, IE. UA to EZE, then SAA to JNB.

Or you could just go to IAD and connect to SA to JNB.

Or fly direct from JFK.

This is actually probably your best option in Y as far as service quality goes.

JFK on SAA - get it over done quickly - Y is pretty decent. I liked the IFE - the flight didnt seem that long.

Next choice would be TK, but with obviously longer trip time, followed by Swiss.

I'd probably pick EgyptAir last

Another vote for SA from JFK. My only experience is in C, and they are actually pretty good. Better seats than Lufthansa or United, full flat in 2-2-2 configuration on an A340.

Your shortest options from JFK (all airlines, not just Star):

Thanks everyone!
I was getting good pricing from CO/UA connecting in Europe, significantly less expensive than the direct from JFK which doesn't seem to run every day. I looked into connecting in Brazil and the cost on one ticked was significantly higher when I checked but it's worth another look. The mileage is important to me and I am already aware of the 50% mileage fares and have seen this on every connection so far on SA, LH, LX. CO let's you search only certain fare classes so I'm using this tool in my searches to choose 100% fares. It's gets confusing with the different fares on different airlines. I'm trying for 1 ticket which will help if something goes wrong.
Thanks again and I'll check out some the the options suggested.

SA has more legroom

All the SA birds have between 33" to 35" in Y, which doesn't sound like a lot, but LH and SWISS have some of the tightest 31" seats I have ever been in. Just something to consider for the long flights.

I also noticed that the SA flights are consistently a little less full than the LH or SWISS flights when I have gone between Europe and Africa. I can usually get a middle section aisle seat and have an empty middle next to me on SA, while I have never had an empty seat next to me on LH or SWISS...could just be luck as well.

All Y food sucks, but I think SWISS > LH > SA.

SWISS and SA AVOD > LH AVOD

good luck with finding a good flight!

Newark to JNB

I am flying to JNB via FRA and back for 80k miles.

I am going from IAH to FRA and yes a long layover on CO
then SAA from FRA to JNB.

I return JNB to FRA on LH and back to IAH on LH the 380 coach seat are great
made that last March also.
Doing this leaving IAH on the 11th and return on the 28th from JNB.

I would suggest the booking the JFK-JNB nonstop flight on SAA. The flight does operate daily with an A340-600. Seats is Economy Class have 34" pitch (legroom), which is about 3" more than LX or LH. Food is good and all seats have AVOD. The flight is 15 hours, which is a little longer than most of the layovers in Europe, which tend to be anywhere from 8-12 hours on LH or LX.

I am a frequent flyer on the JNB-IAD route and my preference would be to avoid the SAA. Sometimes, there are ok flights, but quite often the planes are dirty, staff is rude and food is awful. Also, recently they had issues with cancelations of flights from IAD to JNB (e.g. flight SA208 was cancelled on February 12, 13 and 14).
