Lounge Access Question

Hello everyone,

Long time lurker here and am trying to find out information for a friend of mine who is traveling on an award ticket. He's a 2P on United so I know that he will not qualify for lounge access based on *G. Here's his routing information:

Outbound: PDX-YVR-YYZ-ZRH-LHR-MUC
Inbound: MUC-LHR-LAX-PDX

PDX-YVR-YYZ-ZRH is all on Air Canada J, while ZRH-LHR is LX in J, with the exception of PDX-YVR which is Y class only. Will he get lounge access to the United Club in Portland based on him flying International Business class on AC from YYZ-ZRH?

The inbound flights are operated by LH (MUC-LHR), Virgin Atlantic (LHR-LAX) and UNited LAX-PDX (Y right now)..with the first two flights being in Business. Would he be able to access the United Club in LAX based off of flying in Business from MUC to LHR on LH? These flights are the same day.

Thank you in advance..and if I missed a thread on this topic somewhere please feel free to merge and I apologize!

No access at PDX (unless Star Gold)

No access at LAX United club as well.
Sometimes, some airlines offer shower facilities for arriving pax (in bussiness or first). I am not sure what Virgin Atlantic offers. He should ask at Virgin check-in at LHR if they offer these facilities.

The provision for international itineraries accessing the lounge is for UA/CO/US *G travelling in Y, and unfortunately not for people flying international C itineraries with domestic legs. VS does have their Revivals Lounge in LHR post-customs, so depending on the length of your transit in LHR it might not make sense to go there.

Had a similar experience through Asia when I was still *S (i.e. no status).

Same day flight
SIN-BKK (J Class) - Lounge access in SIN permitted
BKK-LAX (PE Class) - Lounge access in BKK not permitted

Return flight
LAX-BKK (PE Class) - Lounge access in LAX not permitted (no love lost)
BKK-SIN (J Class) - Lounge access in BKK permitted (great for a nice shower)

in my experience, if you aren't *G, lounge access is determined solely by your departing flight--class of incoming flight doesn't matter.

I have an upcoming flight from LHR to Vienna on BMI metal but as a Virgin code share. Will I have any problem accessing Star Alliance lounges given the VS code share (I'm *A gold and traveling in biz class)?

No. It's the operating metal that counts (BD in your case) and *G status gets you lounge access.

And in this case so does being in Biz class, I believe.
