TG vs OZ
Hi I'm looking To fly out of Sydney and have two options at this stage TG and OZ. I will either be going SYD BKK CDG or SYD ICN CDG
We will be flying in J and I was wondering If anyone had any recent experiences in both cabins. I would like to know the lounge offerings ,the check in procedure ,and the seats in the sky plus food/service/amenities offered. Also with departure any gifts or good luck cards? Do they offer the buggy service in BKK to take you to the lounge while waiting for a connecting flight . And their general attitude . Many thanks . |
Try to book yourself onto 9W leased 777-300ER on TG. It's the most spacious C class.
Service wise OZ wins. |
well
i heard that if u take TG`s C class, u can have free 30mins massage in BKK.
but i`d rather to tell u take OZ. i feel more friendly and comfortable, when i take OZ. do u know OZ is one of 5 stars airline?:-) |
Yeah I don't get the skytrax rating system Thai is 4 stars as is most of the *A partners. But OZ is 5* yet to book a paid flight it's one of the cheapest out of sydney .
I also don't understand why Many people having a 30min massage in the F lOunge in BKK is such a high point. I called Thai airways and they even use air new Zealand lounge in Sydney. I'm leaning towards OZ but amongst the general population they are not held in high regard. I would like to go in J on OZ with the smartium seat but how do I know what kind of aircraft is fitted with that? |
This may be a more appropriate question for the OZ rather than *A forum?
Unfortunately (others please correct me if I'm wrong) you'd be most unlikely to get the Smartium seats from SYD. I think they only fly the Smartium equipped planes to LAX and SFO? I haven't flown TG, but I have flown OZ in J (SYD-ICN, ICN-LAX). A few points: 1. TG and OZ share the NZ Koru Lounge at SYD. It's a nice lounge; open, airy, decent food, quite big. It's also quite close to the OZ gates, and the staff are very good at finding you when it's boarding time. 2. OZ Check-in is pretty good. I arrived and my departure card was already pre-filled in! (Loved that) 3. I suspect TG's hard product may be better. On SYD-ICN OZ still fly without AVOD (both Y and J), which is a big bugbear for me. 4. OZ's service is imo one of the best going around. FA's are pretty (like all Korean airlines; I have a Korean gf so am slightly biased :P) but are warm, friendly and don't go MIA for long periods (like other Korean airlines I know). Food (both in Y and J) is excellent; you can visualise someone prepared it knowing what they were doing. 5. Have never been to BKK, so can't compare it. But ICN is imo an excellent airport to transfer at. It's a fairly compact airport, so no need for buggies or anything like that. OZ Business Lounge is very nice; spacious and comfortable again. Definitely recommend. Hard for me to compare given I've never flown TG, but if you can get newer planes, go for them. Otherwise OZ's service shines through and I'd go for them in a heartbeat. |
From my readings the QS seats are available SYD-ICN but gauranteeing that aircraft fitted will be the one you fly on is hit and miss. People have reported seein the configuration for the QS and later find they on the old J with the AVOD which is a big negative for me , especially flying with two
Young kids. I have heard good things from ppl re TG in person but nothing re OZ . I wonder why the OZ is priced lower then most other airlines considering some People think it's the best and has the 5* rating |

People think it's the best and has the 5* rating I heard very mix report with TG, they are very inconsistent with the service. OZ on the other hand is consistenly good if you can handle no QS and no AVOD. The good thing I consistenly heard from TG is only the lounge in BKK. For pricing I don't know about it, but not many people actually know the existence is OZ, they are way smaller compare to any other Asian giant like KE/TG/CX/JL/NH, maybe that is the reason they are the cheapest ? |
So does TG have lie-flat and AVOD in J coming out of SYD to BKK and onto CDG?
I need the AVOD and lie flat for a good sleep |

I need the AVOD and lie flat for a good sleep other uncomfortable lie flat beds are those of AAmerican airlines and lufthansa. asiana is a 5 star airline. while I have never flown business class with them, their service was outstanding including the champagne. if that was any reflection of their business cabin then they deserved their 5 stars. Bangkok airport is a nightmare to get around... you may have to walk with your children more than one kilometer to get to where you need to be for transfers etc. it is very unforgiving... and the whole reason why they provide buggies for first class. you get no buggies for business class. the 30 minute massage in the business and first class spa is very welcome. the first class one was a great disappointment for me... but only because I like a good solid massage that works out the knots... not some feather lite touch. and the jacuzzi always seems to have cold water in it :( I love Thai because they have such great service, food and ground handling. and always plenty of award availability. but if I can possibly avoid them I do, because of their angled seats. the best star lounge for business passengers at Sydney is in fact the air new Zealand lounge. it is very nice by all standards! |
Thai = Angled lie flat with AVOD on the SYD-BKK leg and fully flat seat (picture here) with AVOD for the longer BKK-CDG leg.
TG service is usually pretty good but is not just up to the standard of OZ's IMO (although it often can be) Food is similar on both airlines with OZ having a very slight edge over TG. Personally I think there isn't that big a difference in the soft product however the TG hard product is significantly better which is why I would definitely take TG over OZ!! |
So I can either go with OZ and have no AVOD or I can go with TG and have the worse seat in the sky. Not tthe best options . I think my best option if I could get it would be the new QS on the OZ but how can I know what kind of aircraft I'm going to be on
|
So TG sydney to BKK has angled flat beds with AVOD and then BKK to CDG has fully flat seats with AVOD , where opposed OZ has no AVOD but better service I'm going Thai

OZ is hands down the better airline compared to TG in terms of service. The angled seats of OZ are also better than TG's. If you can get a 9W owned 777 on TG then of course this is excellent but there is a chance for aircraft substitution. The white elephant in the room (and the reason why OZ is cheaper) is the fact that the OZ flights do not connect outbound. You need to overnight in ICN which might work well or might be a disaster for you depending on your preferences. |

Have OZ finally upgraded SYD-ICN? I've never been fortunate enough to get it on that flight. I also take the late night ICN-LAX flight, so I miss out on it there too...
