Smile The Maximiser RTW

I am currently planning a RTW for some longer vacations and was playing around with the Star Alliance tool to find a routing ex South Africa with (a) a high number of F/C flghts and (b) close to 39k miles. Well, the result was a routing with exactly 39.000 miles and a bunch of F/C flight:

Capetown - JNB - FRA - Dusseldorf in SA/LH C and LH First
Dusseldorf - Chicago in LH First
Chicago - San Francisco in UA International F
San Francisco - Hong Kong in SQ First
Hong Kong - Singapore in SQ First
Singapore - Bangkok in SQ C
Bangkok - Frankfurt in TG First
Frankfurt - Dubai in LH First
Dubai - Muscat in LX First
Muscat - Zurich in LX First
Zurich - Johannesburg in LX First

Being based in DUS I will need an extra award ticket down to South Africa, a train ticket between DUS and FRA and a cheap ticket ZRH - DUS v/v. The idea is to combine four vacations on two tickets: South Africa, then the tour around the world, then a week in Dubai and Muscat and another trip to South Africa. This RTW has been priced with 11673 Euro all in.

I thought you weren't allowed to visit the same city twice. Your itinerary has you in FRA twice.

It seems that FRA is once a stopover and once a transit city, so it is allowed.

You are allowed quite a few transfers in the very same city but only one stopover. "Capetown - JNB - FRA - Dusseldorf" is just a transer, the stopover is in DUS. I tried to book the return flight to ZA via FRA to use the 380, however, this brought the itinerary over 39k miles.

There is no such thing as backtracking on *A RTW's.
As long as you only cross each ocean once, and 1 transit between Asia-Europe, you
can back-track within regions as much as you want.

Is DXB regarded as Europe?

No, DXB is "Middle East" according to the M&M.

Is DXB regarded as Europe?
Yes. *A RTWs work off IATA conferences. Europe, Africa and Middle East are all in one conference. Asia and Southwest Pacific are in another. The Americas are in another.

Thanks. What made you end up at 39.000 miles? BTW: LH confirmed my to feeder flights into and back from South Africa in FC on the 380. So everything is settled now.

Very nice routing. I especially like how you incorporated the 5th freedom DXB-MCT flight!

I've hit 39,000 miles more than once. Here is one from a trip report a couple of years ago (report includes side trips).

A run around (part of) the axis of evil - a perfect *A RTW in C?

Don't worry, we go to South Africa for a first vacation. Then back to Europe. Two months later to Asia (final destination Bali for a month on an extra ticket) with stops in the US and Hong Kong to see friends) and back to Europe. A month later to Dubai for a conference and back to Europe. And at the end of the day a further trip to South Africa
