Hi all,
It's been a few years now since I last raised the questions so thought I'd ask on this thread for which FF scheme to join again. Reason being is my LX M&M Silver has now expired and I'm basically a 'free agent' to join something else before my next long haul flight (LH, economy, ZRH-FRA-SEA) in March.

Reason I'm keen to move to another FF scheme is LX M&M award flights are very expensive considering the taxes they pass on. When I was BA Silver/Gold out of LHR there were almost no taxes and flying to Continental Europe was cheap Avios points.

(1) What is your home airport? ZRH
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy? Economy
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (25k-50k)
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? None, M&M silver just expired
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? Lounge access, award redemption
(6) Which routes do you fly most often? ZRH to continental Europe, ZRH-SFO, ZRH-FRA-SEA.
(7) Preferred Airlines? LX, LH given the routes from ZHR and the fact I like to avoid stopovers
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?) work 20%, personal 80%

You are confusing real taxes as paid to governments, regulatory authorities and the like.
Surcharges are paid to the airlines (=100% airline profit)
There are cash surcharges on award flights with some ffp’s/routes/airlines. Award surcharge can/are different.
Real taxes on award flights are the same for all airlines for the same route and class.
A surcharge can trigger additional real taxes if the flight changes from a non revenue flight to a revenue flight.

BA have high surcharges on awards. Other airlines can have nil surcharges.

You have a big overlap with AA, QF & EK. AA & QF are Oneworld partners. QF & EK are frequent flyer partners.
The expiry of all these miles/points needs consideration. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...-t-expire.html
www.wheretocredit,com

Lounge access generally comes with status & class of service.
Upgrades with miles/cash co pay now tend to based on the fare you buy and status. Low cost fares are often not eligible for upgrades.
Forget about "free" upgrades on non USA airlines and increasingly on USA airlines

I think I may post here and in the oneworld forum for advice! My first step into this game was with the Southwest Companion Pass, which has served me well, but will be up at the end of 2017. Since WN has no alliance, I haven't had to worry about it yet, but I want to make the best decision for the future. As an addition to the answers below - if I can bank miles to a program that would allow lifetime status at some point, I'd like to.

(1) What is your home airport? BOS, (PVD if it helps, but probably won't...)
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? Y, though I'd like to occasionally fly F or J as I start burning more miles.
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? Less than 25k, though with a bit of luck (and a lot of miles) will ramp up with any luck in the next few years!
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? No status, a handful of miles earned from flying on AA and UA (from an old Copa flight).
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? I'd like good award redemption and lounge access. I don't want to worry about miles expiring frequently, and any miles that can be renewed with a credit card are a plus in my book.
(6) Which routes do you fly most often? No plans to fly anywhere in particular in the next few years, just try and see a new country or two each year.
(7) Preferred Airlines - so far, nothing.
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? Pleasure, if I did fly for work I'd get to choose the flights, but likely only Y fare.

Thanks!

(1) What is your home airport?
LHR
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ?
Premium eco (long haul), eco (short haul)
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k)
1 transatlantic and 1 european roundtrip per month, ie 7000 and 1000 per month, so about 90k/year
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Premier, M&M Senator etc)
BA Silver
LH FFT
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.)
Priorities, lounge
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc)
LHR-US, LHR-Europe
(7) Preferred Airlines
For *A, SK, LH, UA for domestic US
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?)
Work, I choose airlines

As I am reaching FFT in M&M with 35KMiles, I will be star silver, which is quite nothing, except at LH (lounge). I would like to aim for star gold, but M&M requires 100KMiles, I won't make it.
I recently saw that for UA, silver is 30KMiles and gold is 50KMiles. If I take as an example my last trips,
- 1 transatlantic in Premium Eco on SK got me 1.5x miles, ie about 6000 M&M miles. When I look at MileagePlus, it is also 1.5x for qualification -> same
- 1 european in Premium Eco on SK got me 1250 M&M miles. MileagePlus would do 150%, ie about 900 -> less
- 1 european in eco on LO got me between 200 and 1000 M&M miles, MileagePlus would be between 25 and 100% -> a bit less
- 1 domestic US got me 100% -> same
- TAP european, etc, seems to be the same.

It seems that I may gain a bit less miles on UA, but the silver threshold is also a bit less than LH; however, the gold threshold is half lower! I'm therefore considering starting crediting my miles to UA. I would have no issue to make the four segments. Anything missing?

I am a BA CE member and my membership from Jan 2017 will be valid till Jan 2019. Is it the same for UA and LH?

I'm also considering SK Eurobonus or TP Victoria, possibly AC, but for other *A airlines, I don't see myself flying on them often

Thanks,

Hi all,

Hoping for a bit of advice here:
(1) What is your home airport? AAR or CPH, both Denmark - so Scandinavian Airlines is big here
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? Cheapest economy
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? Varies - 50k+
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? Asiana Platinum (*A Gold)
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? Lounge access and luggage first, awards second, upgrades 3rd
(6) Which routes do you fly most often ? AAR-EWR but also transatlantic routes - many with scandinavian airlines
(7) Preferred Airlines : Star Alliance, and primarily Scandinavian Airlines for logistical reasons
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? Work, pleasure, love

So, I have had some unpredictable travel habits recently and after a couple years as AA Platinum while living in US, I signed up for Asiana last year and earned *A Gold status in January, which is good for the next three years irrespective of whether my flight habits change. However, I do not get upgrades through this, and have thought many times of switching to SAS Eurobonus if I can maintain it. They do not, however, do status matches, which would be convenient.

Does anyone know if there's a way of adding FF number from one company for lounge/service benefits, but crediting miles to a different company, so that I could save up Eurobonus points while still enjoying lounge access and other benefits from Asiana?

Cheers
Frants

GENERAL INFORMATION:

If you fly less than 50k miles per year: it is almost guaranteed that your choice will be between Aegean Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Asiana Airlines. Please look up these airlines' frequent flier programs, and make a decision as to which best suits your needs.
Some considerations to take into account:
Airlines tend to treat members of their own frequent flier program better than members of other frequent flier programs. If you fly one of these airlines, it is recommended that you choose that airline.

Some airlines have better earning/redemption charts for your pattern. For example, if you fly on cheap fares on a certain airline often, Turkish might give you miles for it, while Aegean might not. However, Turkish Airlines might charge much more for the redemption that you want to make than Aegean.

Asiana Airlines offers lifetime Star Alliance Gold for 500k miles over life. The other 2 airlines do not offer this benefit.

Asiana Airlines has a credit in the USA and some other countries. If you are interested in credit cards, check to make sure that the program that you join has a credit card in your country.
If you still aren't sure which frequent flyer program is for you after looking these up, feel free to ask on this thread.

(1) Home airport : BRU
(2) Fares : (Deep) Discount Economy
(3) # Miles : +/- 25K
(4) Status : Used to have OW Sapphire through AA Platinum (making use of challenges)
(5) Important : Collecting miles for redemptions/upgrades secondly I would prefer to find an airline where I could achieve *alliance gold.
(6) Routes : 1 longhaul (4 segments) and 1 or 2 European (usually direct) flights
(7) Preferred Airlines : Flying out of Brussels we would probably fly mostly Brussels and other airlines of the Lufthansa group for the European trips but longhaul might be any other airline.
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? Pleasure so I get to choose the airline.

------------------------
I have been looking at the 3 proposed programs (Turkish, Aegean, Asiana). At first I think Aegean would be the best choice but I need to dig a bit further in the program details.

Who else is flying out of Brussels? Is Aegean OK to collect miles if you typically fly cheap routes?

Apparently a huge difference with OW would be that status only gives you bonus miles when flying the airline of the program you're a member of and not when flying other *alliance airlines.

If you're flying mainly deep discount economy with the LH group (LH, LX, Brussels, etc.) then it's going to be difficult to achieve anything with either of those 3 programs. All of them credit 0% for cheap fares. If you're however willing to look at other carriers, for example United and Scandinavian, you can receive at least 50% mileage on all flights. The LH group is just brutal honestly. They destroyed their own M&M program, and are now dumping on everyone else too.
