Cancel flight due to last minute family emergency
Does Spirit ever offer an accommodation on a last-minute cancellation, due to a family emergency? Friends who were in town visiting family were waiting at the airport for their flight home, when they were notified that a local family member had just suffered a massive heart attack. They tried to find a Spirit agent to report that they would not be flying out today, but there was none in sight, so they called Spirit. After explaining the situation and requesting a credit to be used for future travel, they were point-blank turned down. The fare paid was less than the 0-6 day change/cancellation fee, so that's not a viable option.
A refund is not being requested - just a credit for future travel. Any suggestions, i.e. Twitter, etc.? |
I would try submitting a credit request with documentation of the family member's illness and see what Spirit says. The call center will just give you canned answers but the reps who handle credit requests might have more discretion, especially when there is documentation to support the request. Your friends don't have much to lose.

Doesn't Spirit have a cancellation fee?

Thanks for the reply. The family member currently is on life support. I don’t know how

Good luck. Spirit is notorious for not allowing any type of changes for non refundable fares regardless of reason. Their business model isn't to compete with others on services, but on fares and charging for anything and everything they can outside of it.
