Spring 9-day Trip in Spain (Madrid and Seville)

I'd like to hear what you think about this 9-day trip in Spain this spring. We plan stay 4-5 nights at city center. 3-4 nights in Serville. And one last night close to Madrio and fly back. Total 9 nights and 10 days.

Originally planned to go to Granada for one or two days. But I think it is such a rush and it may be better to go there next time. No plan to visit Barcelona at this time.

1. Better spend 4-4 days in Madrid/Seville or 5-3 in those two cities? I know it is personal preference. I tend to prefer 4 and 4 days each. Travel also cuts into the time.
2. Since we return to MAD to fly back, I plan to stay at Toledo or another place close to Madrid. Any other places? It should be easy commute to MAD airport. This may be better than returning directly from Seville.
3. Is it a good idea to rent a car out of Madrid? Or train would be a better to go?

Much appreciated.

If you’re just going to Madrid and Sevilla, and possibly Toledo, I would say take the train. The high speed train is 2 1/2 hours to Sevilla from Madrid, much faster than driving. The train Madrid to Toledo is just half an hour. Toledo is definitely worth seeing. If you want to do a day trip from either city, you could easily go to Segovia or Cuenca or El Escorial from Madrid; and Ronda or Cadiz from Sevilla.

I would opt for the 5/3, as there are several easy day trip options out of Madrid. But it depends on what you like to do.
From Toledo is not an easy commute to the Madrid airport.

Unless you plan on going exploring off the beaten path, I would opt for train over car rental. Parking in Sevilla will be a pain. And the train is easy and convenient. The train track to Toledo is a bit hidden, but people will direct you.

Edited to add: Depending on which terminal and when you are leaving, you could always take the train to the Madrid airport. Arrives at T4, but shuttle buses to the other terminals.

Last week RENFE (the national train operator) started to operate the high-speed service from Seville to Granada (2h30min) so you can go and come back in the day or do Madrid-Granada-Seville-Madrid. You can buy the ticket in the RENFE website and the service is named "AVANT".

I will only consider renting a car to go from Madrid to Seville if you are a family of 4-5, as the train can get expensive. Otherwise train is so convenient that there is no point in looking for other options.

All good advice. Then we probably take the train since we do not have many places to visit.

We'll fly out of terminal 4S at noon time. The thinking is that it may be better to stay close to MAD for the night before flight. This is why we plan to stay at Toledo the night before. I can change the plan to stay at Madrid one day longer, have a day trip. Then go to MAD airport directly from Seville. So it is like this:

1. 4-5 nights at Madrid, 1 night at Toledo or another place, 3-4 nights at Seville. Then take train to MAD airport
2. 4-5 nights at Madrid, 3-4 nights at Seville and 1 night at Toledo. Then go to MAD airport.

We could do a day trip to Toledo. But the hotel there is cheaper and we prefer more local atmosphere. Hope it is easy to go from Toledo from Seville.

I just like the simple logistics. Travel time really cut into the time we could spend visiting places.

Actually involves a connection in Madrid, there is no direct Toledo - Seville train.

The early morning trains from Seville will leave you in Atocha Station at 9am, which is more than enough for a 12am flight at T4S, but I will not risk taking a later train if you are not familiar with Atocha and the airport. Remember than your HST ticket comes with a free public transport ticket, so you don't need to pay the ticket to the airport, the machines will give you one for free.

Then it seems it is better to go back the original plan to return to Toledo or another town close to Madrid, then head back to airport. Just do not want to rush to catch the plane.

On our way back from Sevilla to Madrid, if we want to stay one night at Cordoba, can we take the same train? Do we buy two separate tickets or one ticket with stop?

<!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->I don't know where you come from and if your trip is still planned but I would say it is better for you to stay 4 days in Madrid and 4 days in Sevilla as they are so many things to see in both cities. If you want to go to Toledo you can easily take the train from Madrid at the Atocha train station and no need to rent a car train services are good and not that expensive in Spain. Also, if you plan to visit Madrid, I will advise you to see the best museums such as the Prado and the Reina Sofia, don't forget the Royal Palace and the Debod Temple! Finally, you definitely should go for a flamenco dance show and a tapas tour! I will recommend you to book tours for all those experiences not to miss anything of the Spanish culture and history, here is a nice company which provides tours (https://madrid-discovery.com/), feel free to have a look at it!
