Madrid Airport: short connection, separate tickets?

If I was landing into MAD at 2:40p on a Luthansa flight, what would be the chances of catching a 3:35p flight on Iberia?

Not enough time?

I'm not familiar with that airport. That does seems a bit tight connection though. I assume they are at least on the same ticket?

I assume you're flying within the Schengen area. You will have to transit T2 to T4 I believe. That's shuttle ride of about 10 minutes. It's tight, but I would expect you'll make it. If it's on the same ticket, they'll get you where you need to go. I wouldn't book it on separate tickets.

It would be on a separate ticket as the Luthansa flight is a UA award flight, and the Iberia flight would not be.

If that's the case this is a very bad idea. id leave several hours between flights on separate tickets. If you are late you will have to pay walk up fare as Iberia is not responsible for other carriers delays. There is a strong chance your bags will not be checked all the way through. That's if you can even check in for the Iberia segment before you leave the US or Germany

Madrid Airport Question

you still haven't answered where you are flying to, but the answer under any scenario is that, on separate tickets, this would not be a wise amount of time at any airport in the world.

Since your query pertains to one specific airport, it will do better here in the dedicated Spain destination forum.

Good luck, and safe travels!

It would be madness.

I would be coming into MAD from FRA heading to EAS.

Yep still an incredibly bad idea. Especially since there are over a dozen daily flights so you can easily book a later one

Impossible. It will take at least an hour to get to the gate from T123 to T4.

I don't see why you wouldn't go straight to BIO and then just take the bus the rest of the way. It would be way faster anyway.

Agree. If there are direct flights to BIO, this is a much better idea.

Similar question. I am arriving at MAD on Delta with about a 2 hour connection on AZ to continue on to FCO. They are booked on the same ticket. Will I have to clear customs in MAD? Is this connection too tight? Thanks!!

LupineChemist Jan 21, 2015 11:00 pm

You should be fine. AZ leaves from T2 and DL arrives at T1 so there is a bit of a walk once you're landside. It's not that bad, though and honestly less than a lot of transfers within T4/T4S.

Passport control rarely takes more than a couple minutes. I always had more problems waiting for luggage with the DL inbound, but if connecting it shouldn't be an issue at all.
