How early can I check in luggage from Madrid to Toronto on AA?

How early can I check in luggage from Madrid to Toronto on AA?
We're flying out of Madrid to Toronto via JFK in April on American Airlines. We will arrive in Madrid the day before we fly home. Instead of hauling our luggage to the hotel and back, I was wondering if we could check-in somehow (i.e.dropping luggage with them and getting boarding pass, although the boarding pass in not important to us). Some websites seem to suggest we could do that as early as 20 - 24 hours prior to flight time. Anybody know for sure or past experiences, please share.
