For our SAN-LAS flight (3:05pm on 1/1/2020), I checked in ~2min after T-24 and we ended up getting B7 and B8. The aircraft was ultimately nowhere near full, however, so we ended up getting an entire row to ourselves near the back.

Hardly surprising given the pandemic

Has anyone noticed that boarding positions reserved for A-List members are not available for non-A-List passengers even after the A-List reservation has been cancelled?
I was supposed to travel with my brother and had the exact same flights however am an A-List member. Many hours after T-24 prior to flight, I cancelled my flight and my brother checked in immediately after. He did not get my A21 boarding position but one much later. In the past, anything greater than A16 was up for grabs if an another passenger cancelled.
Thinking this was a fluke and someone checked in at the exact moment and grabbed it, we tried it on the return flight today as well.
Same situation, my A19 was not captured by him. I find the chances extremely slim someone checked in again at the same time, many hours after the T-24 period.
Curious if anyone else has noticed this?

Unless something has recently changed (which is possible), those positions should be released and given to the next person who checks in. Without any other data points, my guess would be that you tried too quickly, and that perhaps the system doesn't release the position immediately.

+1

OAK-BUR
T-24 -> A-29
T-22 -> A29 (earlier flight)

Makes me somewhat confident that passengers will be nicely spaced on the plane and should be able to get a seat near the back exit for BUR.
