Basic vs. Choice Using 6-Month Expiring Funds
I agreed with many of you that I didn't want to deal with 6-months expiring funds, so I've been purchasing Choice fares for all of our travel. Now it's mid-December 2025 and I have some early June 2026 expiring funds and a need to book late January 2026 travel. It just occurred to me that maybe I should purchase Basic fares for the new January travel using the June expiring funds to save $35-$40 per ticket (Basic vs. Choice). I mean, I'm already inside the six month expiration window, right? These new flights aren't going to expire 12-months later because I book them on a Choice fare using June expiring funds. I'm not missing anything, am I?

If you’re fine with the limited features of Basic vs Choice, then book Basic, regardless of source of funds

...but to your "I'm not missing anything, am I?" question, here's all the other features to consider; some may not matter to you, and some are the same across certain fare types:

Missing same day standby. and free same day change.. if those interest you.
Those are the only two reasons I book choice at time, given I am typically booking with points, the travel credits arent the issue. |
Is it the last flight of the day with earlier options for A-list free standby, I book Basic unless the real flight I want is the first Monday commuter flight (because those are sometimes very iffy for making standby).
If I'm sure I won't change the flight, I book Basic. Otherwise I book Choice. SDC is usually too important for me to give up. |
