Exclamation FAs blocking rows now ?

During pre-board, Flight Attendants were physically blocking Row 1 and Emergency Exit Row, is this new?

Pre-Boarders have never been allowed to take an Emergency Exit Row exit seat. There's always an FA (or 2) standing in the Exit Rows even when general boarding begins, well into general boarding, until the seats fill

When you board a Southwest aircraft, the crew places at least one of the FA's at the boarding door, one at the very rear, and one in the middle between the front and back. The FA has to stand SOMEWHERE, and exactly halfway happens to be where the exit row is located.

Plus he/she is screening for seating eligibility and gives the exit row speech and gets the "willing to help" verbal confirmation.

It often does look like 'blocking" which is nice as the uneducated keeps moving on.

I've gotten into a few interesting conversations with them over the years.

Nothing has changed...

And the FA(s) in the exit row are also there to evaluate if the pax attempting to sit there qualify..."Are you old enough?", "Are you sure you can handle opening the door and assist?", "Do you speak English?"

When flying alone I take the inside LUV seat and strike up a conversation with the FA, getting him/her to stand in the aisle LUV seat, which usually goes out empty!

Sometimes row 1 will be blocked for a VIP. And sometimes row 2 for the VIP's security detail.

I've run into minor celebs flying commercial before, but none big enough to have a security detail with them!

Sat behind Rex Ryan once. And no, I didn't try to slide a bare foot up onto his armrest...

Comedian/Entertainer Adam Carolla regularly talks about flying WN which always cracks me up.

As for the OP, there are also weight/balance issues sometimes and FAs will block certain areas and direct people.

I've seen Laura Bush with her Secret Service detail deboard a Southwest flight at Love Field, they exited via the jet bridge stairs into black SUVs on the tarmac.

This past week I flew on a flight with 60 something thru passengers. They broadcasted that you were allowed to move once they got their count, however you had to leave the first two rows empty for preboarders on the next flight. That was the first time I had heard that announcement blocking the first two rows. Maybe they knew a bunch of preboarders at the connecting flight not sure.
