I guess the commentary on food intended for consumption during flight as the counted, personal item when before it was separate (additional) is interesting. I wonder if other airlines will follow this one? I mean, this typically is laptop bag plus standard overhead carry-on plus food container (maybe there is a distinction of disposable food container versus reusable, but I am not there yet either).

I personally think this part of the change is worthy of FAA telling SWA they went too far, but I don't know who will carry that battle. I know a lot of it is placed on the TSA as the reason, but I find TSA is very accommodating on most food items you might bring especially when it is packed as for consumption during flight. So, that excuse is not an accurate reason.
