Southwest to offer overnight connections

Southwest will start selling overnight connection flights for the first time on June 26. They won’t offer redeye flights, but will use their current schedule to sell itineraries that involve an overnight at six airports – Baltimore; Denver; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Chicago Midway; and Oakland.

No new flights are being added to the schedule, this just adds flight options to sell… that customers should be on the lookout for, because they’re options that many will potentially want to avoid.

Two examples where they’ll be selling an overnight connecting option are Honolulu to Houston and Seattle to Cancun.

Sounds like these awful connections Frontier sells over Denver that often come up as cheapest option.

Interesting. I was just in a position last week where this could've been useful.

Except Eastern's Moonlight Special actually offered middle of the night connections....These new Southwest connections actually require a passenger to spend a full night in the connecting city.

It's nice to at least have the option. I think I'd rather book one of these coming home from Hawaii versus having to wake up at like 4:00am on my last day.

Last week I was trying to put together a flight from Upstate NY to SAN, connecting thru DEN to meet up with my son who will be traveling with me. I even priced out a Multi City trip, but the times/prices didn’t make sense. I found a cheap economy seat on United through IAD and upgraded the IAD leg to First for $400. One my issues of trying to use WN thru DEN is that my son lives about an hour from the airport (doesn’t everyone, a hotel would have added about $200 to the cost and I have zero interest staying at the airport overnight.

That said, given the right circumstances I would consider this as an option.

Do these fares imply the connecting airport allows "waiting" on the premises overnight ?

I've looked at award flights on AA where one could go for a low number of miles with a layover from around midnight to 6 a.m. at LAX or PHX.

Similar to PSA airlines' "midnight flyer" in California. The flight originated in San Diego, flew to LAX, FAT, SFO, and finally SMF. $10. No snacks and no reservations. You just showed up at midnight, paid the fare, and got onboard. If too many showed up, a second plane and crew were dispatched. One of these flights was even hijacked to Cuba. I only flew it once or twice and only because my work day ended very late.

AA.com loves to offer simple relatively short haul connecting itin rewards with trip durations > 24 hours. Their married segment logic is horrific.

I've actually flown DRO-PHX-DFW (overnight) DFW-TPA on AA for about 6K miles. Flight got into DFW after 1 AM and earliest Admirals Club opened 4 AM or so. Was able to nap in a corner recliner until morning flight time to TPA. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
