There are plenty of UA non-stops around the same price, so that's probably the safest choice. I guess the bag fee is a small price to pay to not stop twice on the way to DEN.

I'm biased, but I wouldn't worry about a 645AM two-stop flight. The nonstop is worth an extra $40 to most people.

If this is likely to recur, I recommend that you get the $95 United Explorer card and purchase your United tickets with it. One free bag per person on the same reservation if you are one of the passengers but only if the ticket was purchased with the United card. If does count to pay the $5.60 tax with the card if you redeem UA miles for the trip.
