I'm reviving this thread just to confirm the current policy. If I have travel funds expiring in a given month, it's not possible to book a dummy flight, cancel it, and get new travel funds, correct?

Just to clarify... if you cancel, the travel funds go back to their original date, so booking a dummy flight serves zero purpose.

I want to book a flight using $50 GC and about $50 cash. If I decide not to use the flight, I have a year from booking date? If that is case, I might wait to book flight.

That's the case, assuming the GC doesn't expire while you wait

The funds expire one year from original booking date (unless you comingled funds that already had an earlier booking date, which would cause all funds to expire on that earlier date). It is important to note that the new travel must be completed within that year, not just that they have to be used/applied within that year.

Why would regular gift cards expire? I bought it years ago. It is actual gift card not travel funds. I do not think it ever expires

You are correct, Southwest Gift Cards do not expire.

Some gift cards from other companies slowly lose value over time until they get to zero.

Not in Illinois. That would be illegal.

That used to be true, but those fees have mostly been eliminated after the Credit Card Act of 2009.

Thanks! at the time that we launched the Southwest gift card, only CA had a law against gift cards expiring or devaluing.

First, because its the right thing to do for our Customers, and second because we do a large amount of business in CA - we consciously chose that our gift cards would not expire.

I don't follow the gift card industry outside that original product, so I wasn't aware things had evolved!
