From https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/co...ravel-advisory :
The requirements of the travel advisory do not apply to any individual passing through designated states for a limited duration (i.e., less than 24 hours) through the course of travel. Examples of such brief passage include but are not limited to: stopping at rest stops for vehicles, buses, and/or trains; or lay-overs for air travel, bus travel, or train travel. |

Question: New York has a quarantine for travelers from Illinois. Does that include airport layovers? Will arriving in BUF from MDW cause one to be quarantined or face a big fine?

I would probably do it. If you misconnect it sounds like you’ll have multiple options - either a long wait for a direct flight, or connecting in another city. I’d guess that chances are relatively high that there would be open seats on at least one of those options so you’d get to BUF same day.
(Presumably if you’re stuck there for 5 hours you could also go out of security to be outside for some of that time if you’re concerned about indoor covid transmission too). |

MID is very small and unless the flight is really late, you will make it. Have a back up plan, but I'd do 35 at MID. Heck, I have made 35 at ORD.

I would try the short connection. You will spend minimal time in the airport, which has poorer air filtration than the airplane.

Most flights are arriving earlier than their scheduled time due to shorter taxi times..Just to be safe you can allow an hour.

Some where else you can go that isn't coast-to-coast?

I don't need to be in BUF. I am just fleeing the wildfires in PDX. But COVID is still a thing, and I am not particularly interested in staying in hotels or at the airport overnight.
I see two nonstop flights from MDW to BUF, one of them being my connection, so there's only one other nonstop as a backup that is five hours later. Otherwise, all the other MDW to BUF routes listed have connections as well. im orginally from BUF and has sister, relative, friends there and have done thus toute many times. 35 min in made is fine. The airport is smaller. Depending on departure time you could be waiting for an inbound flight. with Covid from WAS there is only one flight available through midway. unsure on current schedule..buffalo had daily nonstop from las, phx, and denver. These may have bern removed so only option is through bwi or mdw |

Airport is a secure, separate area considered federal property, not state land. i |
Just an update: the person who said flights are running early was correct. I landed at Midway 10 minutes early, so I had 45 minutes for my connection. My flight from MDW to BUF was also quite empty, so the boarding process was quick, HOWEVER they were clearly holding the flight for someone who hadn't boarded, so we ended up not leaving as soon as we otherwise could've. That makes me think they would've waited for me.
Personally, because I didn't want to remove my mask to eat anyway, there wasn't anything for me to do during the connection other than walk to my gate, which luckily was in the same terminal. I was shocked at how full MDW was. There frankly was no social distancing in the lines for food and people were standing around in packs waiting for their orders. People without masks sitting in close proximity eating. I was floored - you could tell me what I was seeing was pre-COVID and I'd believe it. So, I was definitely not going to put myself in those crowded spaces for food. I would recommend people take precautions if they go to MDW - it did not look safe to me. |

No one mentioned anything about quarantining or anything like that to me. The BUF airport really needs to set up a better checkpoint than the one they had, honestly, although I have to admit BUF was practically empty except for my flight arriving so they were able to corral us. Not everyone can be trusted to be a responsible individual but I personally am voluntarily quarantining until I can know I don't have COVID. NY offers free COVID testing with ease so I have a COVID test for Thursday (four days after my flight) and one again Monday (eight days after my flight). If they both come up negative, I'll probably schedule one more after 15 days just to be absolutely sure - from what I read, most cases will show up within 8 days, but the incubation period can be as long as 14 days. I don't want to be that jerk that gets someone else sick. I did wear two N95 masks (one was too big, so it fit right over my other one - I figured why not) and a face shield. I was very cautious, and it was a hassle. But getting out of Portland and getting clean air was worth it, and if I don't get COVID, it was worth it. Too many people didn't take it seriously. One guy removed his mask to sneeze multiple times on my PDX > MDW flight - sir, do you understand what the mask is for?! |
