So I've got a trip I'm thinking of taking this Fall which requires air travel so guess better take it on or before Sept 30 because sounds like perhaps half of scheduled commercial air travel in the US may disappear after Sept 30 ?

You may be right. UA only needs 3,000 of 25,000 flight attendants in June. Still...TSA "traveler throughput" is 2x from mid-April. 'Mask wars' between the pax and crew could pose a drag.

Airlines will take years to achieve what will be seen in the future as the glory days of 2019.

Actually over half has already disappeared. So, no massive change on one day. But, the number of flights we have had in the past will not return for quite some time - unless a vaccine is found, and available quickly and cheaply.

Since they ran a more generous $49 sale than usual, they attracted more bookings. At least they are doing their part to try to get people flying.

RNO-LAX, RNO-SAN just $49, in June no less; it has been a while since I saw those deals. Most "sales" lately were at $79+.

What isn't going to return any time soon is business travel. Heck, my employer is so concerned about any air travel that if you do any air travel (whether for work or pleasure) you must not enter any company facility for a week after returning from the trip. Pretty much says do not get in a plane, if you work here.

Yeah, I'm possibly flying BOI > PHX in June and Southwest is doing $63 one way. I haven't seen it under $100 for a long time, especially at only 3 weeks out.
