Rapid Rewards Gift Cards--No Amazon, Target or Walmart

I noticed that Amazon, Target and Walmart gift cards are no longer available for redemption using Rapid Reward points. Will they be coming back or not? Is there a connection between these gift cards no longer being available and the COVID-19 epidemic? Was there a sudden rush of redemption for those gift cards recently?

Do you think at this point, it would be prudent to redeem for any gift card, since the future of air travel is uncertain due to the pandemic? Once all the supply of gift cars have been redeemed, will Southwest restock?

Interesting.

WN probably finally realized what I posted about here long ago, that when owners of God knows how many billions of points decided to cash them in en masse, they’d have a serious problem.

It’s a $20B revenue company (or was). 6 ppd on WGA fares plus however many they sell to Chase, plus others, is a LOT of points.

If you had a billion points would you redeem them for whatever gift card selections they have now or wait and hope things get back to normal with more gift card choices?

I am holding for future WN flights. But I don’t have a gigantic amount like some people. Only about 110k.

Those particular cards routinely come in and out of stock. I suspect they're now out of stock due to people purchasing all of them, perhaps in a rush ala toilet paper. The cards should come back at some point. Probably maybe.

Southwest has nothing to do with the redemption of these gift cards, that's handled by More Rewards, a third party. (Southwest does pay More Rewards for the points it collects, and gives guidance on policies.) There are still over 100 different gift cards available for purchase with points, along with a wide range of other items, so it seems unlikely that Southwest has shut down redemptions.

That said: It does appear that Southwest has removed the "Redeem for More Rewards" link from the homepage, and has edited the information on the Rapid Rewards > How To Redeem page to specify that More Rewards is now (again) only available to Rapid Rewards Credit Cardholders. So there's been a tightening at least. Since More rewards is an advertised benefit of the credit card, it is possible that Southwest is leaving this open to cardholders only because they must, per contract with Chase.

I wonder how many Chase credit card holders there are out there who won't be flying in 2020 and might panic redeem points for the remaining gift cards?

And I wonder what contractually Southwest can do if they need to stop the outflow of cash to More Rewards.

I guess we'll see.

Lots of people on the blogs and in Facebook groups saying they are redeeming various points for statement credits, gift cards, and cash.

Rapid Rewards points can't be redeemed for cash to my knowledge.

That's why I said “various” points.

Amex MRs for example.

Always wiggle room and ambiguity in things written by WN. There is a real art to it.

If there are over 100 different gift cards available, then things seem to be okay.

Running low on just about anything is becoming the new norm folks.

I guess (hope) these are physical plastic Amazon giftcards that are US mailed? I've gotten virtual, instant Amazon Giftcards from other vendors in the past. I stupidly have almost 1MM points from heavy travel that ended 5+ years ago, I can't travel anymore and have given away what I can to F&F. Doh...
