The other possibility is that Southwest misjudged demand and they aren't selling as many seats as they thought at the higher prices. This is a new market with very different dynamics than the US domestic market, although I think it might be similar to the Caribbean markets.
Or May is just a lower travel period than summer.

It's just today that is cheap, and tomorrow today will be cheap, and on Thursday today will be cheap...it's cheap same day fares, and maybe tomorrow

That is good information. If I were flying to Hawaii I'd always check the couple of days before my flight to see if I could get some money back, especially useful if you book on points.

Actual reason from WN executives and flight deck crew: MANY seats are blocked from these flights due to weight/fuel limitations from US mainland to Hawaii. Other carriers are not affected due to lower seat density as a reult of a dual cabin config with business class. For example , the launch SJC-HNL went out with 130 out of 175 seats occupield... It was sold out at T-48hrs, had 1 seat for sale at T-23hrs, 5 seats for sale at T-10hrs, and zero no-shows.

Southwest is releasing some seats VERY close-in once weather reports and performance data from the prior few days are logged.

Fortunately as others have commented, revenue management has chosen NOT to put a T-14/T-7 day mininum purchase requirement on Wanna Get Away fares.

The SJC-HNL inaugural had a surprising amount of festivities seeing that it was just a new route as opposed to a new city. Balloons and live hawaiian music at the gate. We were given gift bags, blankets, luggage tags, first flight certificates, cookies, and SJC-HNL rubber duckies.
I had a departure out of SJC Terminal A (Grrrrr) later on Sunday and a few of the leftover goodies had floated over to those gates.

This is really good info. Thank you for sharing, and it explains a lot of the price movements I’ve been seeing.

Also on the OAK-OGG flights I flew the cabin was 100% full but at least 40% children. Don’t know if WN’s W&B software is smart enough to use the lower weights for the kids.

On the other hand there was a large mountain of checked bags, so....

I flew OAK-OOG and back in April with 175 each way.

I'm sure they use the allowed weight differential when planning for fuel reserves for children under x years. Also I know they have been feeding in performance data together with estimates to see how many more seats they can fill. Some trips that looked hopeless to non revenue pax have turned out quite well for them at the gate. I bet 175 will be common on days with favorable winds othewise they will block a dozen or so.

I asked if it would ever be a route where they'd do a baggage embargo (1 free per person which is what they do during holidays to some Carribbean destinations) and was told that was not on the table.

I'm surprised that Southwest was willing to start these flights with that 40 seats empty, On the other hand it will make the cabin more comfortable with that many open seats.

I wonder how the MAX8 would calculate out. It's supposed to be more fuel efficient. I know they were planning on using the MAX8 on the Hawaii routes. I wonder if they were planning on using it exclusively at some point and whether that was part of their decision making on going to Hawaii..

I doubt many are going with 40 empty other than maybe the inagurals or inaugural week, based on some reports of OAK-Hawaii being at 175.

On the existing Hawaii routes, it would only take a few % fuel efficiency gains in order to eliminate blocking any seats and depart with 175 passengers even if there are moderate headwinds.

I think future routes such as an Diego to Hawaii need either the MAX or both seat blocking AND the occasional tech stop for fuel at SJC/SFO prior to flying to Hawaii. Routes such as Las Vegas to Hawaii flat out need the MAX.

I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall when Southwest decided to fly -800s on these first routes (they were never MAX then downgauged). Perhaps to gain performance data, perhaps for better fleet interchangability. Perhaps it was dumb luck--the ETOPS certification and test process took so long, maybe they decided to lead with 737NG in order to keep their more efficient MAX fleet in revenue service as opposed to out for testing/certification use.

My understanding is that they never got ETOPS certification on the MAX8s only on the 800s and were still working on it when the MAXs were grounded.

Quite a fortuitous decision to lead ETOPS certification and initial Hawaii flights with the 800s.

Imagine if WN had led ticket sales with the MAX without certifying the 800 yet. They'd have been faced with a huge issue: how/if they could get 2800 seats... 1400 passengers a day in each direction to and from Hawaii... without interline agreements. (175 pax x 2 flights a day to x 2 destinations OGG/HNL x 2 origin airports OAK/SFO).

Exponentially worse than when their codeshare with ATA for Hawaii flights abruptly halted due to bankruptcy. WN paid hundreds/thousands a person to rebook and salvage family vacation plans, nonrefundable hotels, etc.

The equipment is the least of the issues. Airtran also had some ETOPS equipped 737s They turned them over to Southwest.
Southwest was obligated to start over with the certification since they were not already certified.
