Free messaging coming in October
 
I noticed the entertainment placard stated that free messaging is coming to select planes next month. Anyone know any more details?

It has started to slowly roll out already.

On planes with free messaging available, you will see a “Free Access” button instead of a link to payment page on the messaging tab in the WiFi portal. The service is limited to iMessage and WhatsApp and does not support sending photos.

I tried to upload a screenshot of the portal but I’m having issues with the upload from device function on FT.

I’m unsure what you mean. It will roll out fleet wide slowly; I don’t know the logic to the order of deployment.

This would be nice since Southwest isn't gogo so I don't get the free T-Mobile wifi.

got it. That’s what I was curious about. It said on select flights so i was unsure what that meant.

This is a wonderful surprise.

When the A-list preferred login doesn't work, which still happens from time to time, I will be able to send and receive messages.

What messaging apps are compatible? I read elsewhere that it includes iMessage, but what other ones?

No it will not. Plain vanilla SMS texting. No voice, No pictures/No MMS.

Are you seeing the inability to "A-List" or just plain INOP WiFi? It seems like lately 20-30% of the flights this year I either don't have a signal, or the signal goes nowhere.
