I saw the CEO on MSNBC yesterday stating that, He also mentioned their "low fares". Then in the next sentence how he wasn't concerned about rising fuel costs because their margins are so high...

Flew the new flight number on 8881 Tuesday LGA - DAL and was only $85 so I changed ti this flight from the 6am flight, was uneventful and full, in fact we got to DAL an hour early

Whats odd though is Google does not show the first 2 legs of 8881 LGA - DAL and DAL - MSY if you type WN 8881, I guess it takes a bit for them to get the flight data in the search engine

FlightAware - which had your Tuesdsy flight arriving 27 min early - includes all the WN 8881 city pairs.

PR is currency. They understand that better than anyone.
Yes, goodwill is a real consideration when analyzing an annual report.
But are you devaluing WN's gesture because it accrues benefit to them?

I’m devaluing the gesture because it is being sold as compassion to get a few good days of press.
other Airlines do these things, but don’t put the stories out on the wire for everyone to fawn over.

I believe a few passengers ran to the press with this before SWA publicly acknowledged anything. IIRC the same pax who did FB live was quoted in a story about the check.

I've never heard of any airline gifting 5 Grand to 170 or so passengers because they were on a flight that went bad. Not without a bunch of personal injury lawyers involved.
Maybe you're right. Maybe they all do it and it never gets reported.
But I think it was a unique gesture from an industry that generally begrudges even giving their best customers an upgrade. Or do you have another explanation for the constant devaluation of FF benefits?
And the idea that if a business accrues goodwill by some corporate action it renders the action entirely self-serving is certainly not shared by these passengers any more than by a town where a corporation cleaned up after itself instead of creating another EPA Superfund site.

Reductio ad absurdum.

Earlier I agreed with the statement that no one should believe the gesture was purely altruistic. I think that point stands.
