The issue identified in the OP, if it ocurred as reported, is simply that at least one, if not two, passengers went way over the top. It doesn't matter what the WN policy is, what matters is the appropriate reaction to what the policy was thought to be.

Something such as this, causing a 1-hour delay for the rest of the passengers and engaging in criminal conduct onboard, ought to result in a lifetime ban.

Nothing suggests "enforcing carry-on bag size" had a thing to do with it.

Bins show closed in the video, suggesting the pax was told he'd have to gate-check. The initial dispute was with an FA, not another pax.

That aside, Southwest rejected Space bins, which Boeing sold to other 737 customers.

"Southwest falls just behind Alaska Airlines with the largest free carry-on bags at 10 x 16 x 24 inches. The generous size is worth looking into if you don’t want to wait around for your checked bags to arrive."

What?? Space bins are on all of SWs new jets. When is the last time you flew on SW?

Flew WN Sunday MCI-ATL.

All new 737's have "Boeing Sky Interior" but Southwest told USA Today it wasn't ordering Space Bins. If they reversed course in the last 30 months, it would have made a monster marketing promo.

"Southwest, the world's largest operator of the 737, currently has no plans to add Space Bins to its existing 737 orders."

Help me out here. What if anything does this brawl have to do with open seating?

Nothing. It's FT. So, the problem with OH space means that every other undesireable feature of the carrier, in this case WN, has to be drawn into the middle of it. It's also because WN only puts 2 ice cubes in a drink cup.

Its another opportunity for a lit fuse. The seat savers claiming the first rows for their friends in the C group, the one guy who buys the early boarding upgrade and then wats to save the bulkhead seats for his friends further back, or the exit row savers..... SWAs refusal to define what an open seat is............. etc.....

Not to point out the obvious. Again. But obviously when you are responding to a subsequent post, you are responding to that post. The question is if the way WN operates and it's customers behave isn't for you, why are you beating a dead horse about saved seats etc and starting a thread with inaccurate and inflammatory statements?

The IT system glitches, the fire on the 737 engine recently, the winter storm on the east coast... Let's blame 'em all on the seat policy!

Because it was neither.

Maybe its the bar tender's fault for serving the guy one last drink before he boarded and turning him into an aggressive fool.

Bottom line is that it doesn't matter. Maybe the guy was drunk, in a bad mood and had the seat he wanted "saved" out from under him. Still doesn't excuse the conduct. Part of growing up and participating in civilized society is to be able to interact without your fists.

Exactly. Ive seen and dealt with quiet my share of people behaving badly. Their conduct was on them. Blame the alcohol, blame the slow cab driver, blame the people gaming the system, blame the carrier for their faults.... but in the end only you are responsible for your actions. Rise to a level of physical violence, then your interaction with the criminal justice system is solely on you.
