I am not a SW flyer but I could not pass up this deal. I am based in San Diego so SW does have a decent presence with some good flight options. The one thing that's frustrating with SW is their prices are really not any better or even worse than other legacy carriers. However, at the 2 for 1 price it will beat them of course but it's not a true two for one.

How will I know when Southwest has processed my CP? Made my purchase earlier this week and I guess it will take a while for it to be issued.

I think he meant that if you pay a premium to book WN, you aren't getting a legit 2for1 when you use the CP. When I price trips, I price them against even ULCCs, so we often pay a 'premium' (over two tickets, at least) compared to the next best price. Booking fewer than three weeks out, WN isn't usually any cheaper than the legacies, which to me is a better comparison - but the CP is still a very strong equalizer.

The only thing that compares to the CP, in my opinion, is the availability of Spirit's Big Front Seats. On longer flights, I'll take those any day - otherwise, I'm mostly too cheap to be able to ignore B1G1 fares on WN.

Apologies if I'm derailing this further, but... one key consideration re Southwest is that *all* their paid fares are practically refundable (can cancel for 1-year credit) and *all* their award bookings are 100% refundable (!). I think that combo is unique amongst all airlines, at least for those without status, no?

So for me, I'm often gladly willing to pay more $ or more points for a WN booking over a non-WN booking just for the flexibility and peace of mind.

Exactly, sometimes southwest prices out a bit higher than the competition. Specifically I'm looking at flights from San Diego direct to Cabo San Lucas on Alaska. I'm also looking at San Diego to Denver and Las Vegas.

This available to all CA residents. Best I can tell it is not a targeted offer.

As this is the first time this offer has been made, there is literally no way to know.

It's not targeted now, but at the time the comment to which you replied was posted, it was email-targeted-only.

Someone pointed out to me today that you cannot take the companion pass in 2017/2018, and then meet your minimum spend in January 2018 in hopes to hit the 110k points to extend the companion pass to 2019.

If you obtain the CP via this promotion you will not be able to extend it to 2019 even if you hit 110k points due to the way this promotion is set up.

That sounds incorrect to me. If you earn 110 CP qualifying points in 2018 you earn a companion pass for 2018 and 2019 whether you started with nothing or with a 2018 companion pass.

TPG and the actual T&C's disagree

If Companion Pass is earned by flying 100 qualifying one-way flights or earning 110,000 qualifying points in the calendar year while qualified for promotional Companion Pass through December 31, 2018, the regular Companion Pass qualifications will supersede the promotional Companion Pass, entitling the individual to Companion Pass through December 31, 2019.
