With A-list preferred status I have been in the top 3 places on the standby list virtually every time, with over 90% success. The exception is after cancellation of a flight, when the displaced passengers (quite sensibly) have higher priority.

Not saying it is not possible, but a risky move still. I have been 7th on standby and made an oversold flight due to misconnects, but also been #1 and not a single standby got cleared.

What is the standby priority order? I've never paid attention to anything related to the 2 hour standby perk because none of my weekly flights has any any flights that fall into that window. But this changes everything! Is it based on the time the person arrives regardless of A list of A list preferred status? Or will A list preferred get first priority, and is that in order of arrival at the airport or some other factor? Does anyone else get priority over us (other than pax from a cancelled flight)?

My weekly return flight has a lot of the same people flying each week and I have a feeling every one of them is going to take advantage of paying for the really cheap late night flight.

There are about eight categories of standby pax, and as I recall, A+ is somewhere in the middle, after those with connections, those who have already had a flight cancelled, etc.

I predict this is going to cause WN employees to spend a LOT of time managing standbys.

Unless they somehow automate it. That I would like to watch.

A-list same day travel benefit change

Just got this:

"Great news – our same-day standby policy for A-List and A-List Preferred just got even better!

We love that you fly with us and want to make it even more flexible with an exciting update to our same-day standby benefit. Starting today, A-List and A-List Preferred Members can use our free same-day standby benefit on flights scheduled prior to their original departure, between the same city pairs, and on the original date of travel, where a seat is available.

To take an earlier flight, see a friendly Customer Service Agent at the airport on your day of travel."

I just got that email too. Good stuff, I think. Although in the 2 or 3 times I've tried to switch flights last minute at the customer service desk they've done it for me at no cost even though they didn't have to.

Nice to see it formalized though.

Mods may want to consider merging this thread with the pre-existing one discussing this change.

Glad to see it. Hopefully I'll get to take advantage of this at some point. A lot of flights I take or want to take are normally full or close to it!

Per a response from Southwest's social media team today on Twitter on how this affects Companions:

"As long as there's a seat available for your Companion, it should be ok since they're traveling on a complimentary ticket."

Not definitive but a good sign. I'm not certain this will be communicated to and upheld by every GA out there and YMMV. It would also depend on how many stand-bys on the list have priority over your companion. Bottom line, having a Companion does not exclude you from utilizing this perk altogether.

That's a little different than what the FAQ says, so I wouldn't be surprised to discover confusion at the gate.

How does free same-day standby work for A-List and A-List Preferred Members?

Free same-day standby is not available at Southwest® kiosks. Please see a Customer Service Agent at the airport for this benefit. Free same-day standby will be provided for A-List and A-List Preferred Members traveling prior to the original scheduled departure, between the same city pairs, on the original date of travel, where a seat is available. On flights that do not meet these qualifications, A-List and A-List Preferred Members will receive priority standby and will be required to pay the difference in fare if a seat becomes available. A-List Preferred Members will be prioritized ahead of A-List Members. If an A-List or A-List Preferred Member is traveling on a multiple-Passenger reservation, free same-day standby and priority standby will not be provided for non-A-List or non-A-List Preferred Members in the same reservation. For A-List and A-List Preferred Members who have also qualified for a Companion Pass, A-List and A-List Preferred benefits are not available to the Companion unless the Companion is also an A-List and A-List Preferred Member. A-List and A-List Preferred Members can still make confirmed same-day changes for another flight to their destination, if seats are available, and will only pay the difference in fare.

I inquired further on Twitter & WN said free SDC for Companion does not apply, as the website says. With that being said, the application of this rule varies from gate agent to gate agent, from what I've read on here (I am not a CP holder, myself).

I've used the free 2 hour standby with a companion a few times. Never a problem. I think companions fly with regular standby - only one experience with that.

If WN doesn't let companions fly with free same day standby, the companion couldn't fly on the original flight either. In other words, you don't get this perk if you have a companion.

Some brain surgeon at WN ought to realize this and get a process in writing real fast as its a 2 for 1 deal. They should simply say its "ok" but will be the very last 2 seats to clear since the CP designee has no status currently in their eyes.

Just used the new policy today on day one to catch a flight home three hours earlier than I had origiannly booked.

...otherwise it would have been three hours killing time at a Vegas casino and THAT would have been expensive!
