OBSERVATIONS: no2chem has likely found the basis of the methodology WN uses to determine which ratio applies -- the applicable ratio appears to be based on the cheapest available paid WGA fare class bucket, according to the following (as of 4/17/2015):

WGA Fare Classes = Applicable Ratio
nsx has verified that as of April 29, 2016 all five 70-point fare classes are 72 points per $
T = 72 pts / $ 70 pts /$ ($52.93/3705)
N = 72 pts / $ 70 pts /$ ($77.12/5398)
M = 72 pts / $ 70 pts /$ ($147.35/10315)
S = 72 pts / $ 70 pts / $ ($93.86/6570)
O = 72 pts / $ 70 pts / $ ($180.84/12659)
————
R = 74 pts / $ ($219.92/16273)
————
W = 76 pts / $ ($241.30/18339)
H = 76 pts / $ ($275.72/20955)
————
Q = 78 pts / $ ($238.98/18640)
B = 78 pts / $ ($276.19/21543)
————
L = 80 pts / $ ($331.05/26484)
————
AT Fare Classes = Applicable Ratio
YL = 100 pts /$ ($242.70/24270)
BS Fare Classes = Applicable Ratio
K = 120 pts/ $ ($458.41/55021)

However, without a subscription to Expert Flyer, it is difficult for most of us to determine the lowest paid fare class (it is shown in the emailed receipt after purchase and on the boarding pass...but, neither is too helpful). Also, KennyBSAT has found advance-purchase W fares, same-day M & S fares at 74 points/$.

To that end, some of my own observations so far:

1) The applicable ratios used seem to be 70, [72 (??)], 74, 76, 78, & 80 points per dollar of WGA Base Fare. No ratios over 80 have been observed; however, I expect that will change over time.

2) There does seem to be a negative correlation (although, it is a bit too early to read too much into it) between the number of remaining WGA fares left on a flight and the ratio used. In other words, as WGA fares sell out and the last remaining WGA fares are expensive, the ratio used to determine award booking prices also rises.

3) Friday and Sunday flights often use higher ratios (though, not consistently always). And, mid-week (Tuesday & Wednesday) flights seem to be more likely to stay at 70 points per dollar of WGA Base Fare.
Agreed on all points. It's nice to see that not just the very lowest fare bucket is remaining at 70 points per dollar for now. Here's an outstanding post from the other thread. Maybe someone can add it to the Wiki.

T = 70 pts /$ ($52.93/3705)
N = 70 pts /$ ($77.12/5398)
M = 70 pts /$ ($147.35/10315)
S = 70 pts / $ ($93.86/6570)
O = 70 pts / $ ($180.84/12659)
————
R = 74 pts / $ ($219.92/16273)
W = 76 pts / $ ($241.30/18339)
H = 76 pts / $ ($275.72/20955)
Q = 78 pts / $ ($238.98/18640)
B = 78 pts / $ ($276.19/21543)
L = 80 pts / $?
————
YL = 100 pts /$ ($242.70/24270)
K = 120 pts/ $ ($458.41/55021)

(I couldn't find the L class fare I was looking at before, I believe it is 80 pts/$). As before YL is Anytime (hence the standby requires upgrade to YL text on a WGA ticket), and K is business select.

So R class starts bumping things up to 74 pts/$, all the way to B class, with is 78 pts/$. That translates into a 5-11% bump.

Also, as I mentioned before, booking RTs (especially openjaws) is sometimes cheaper than OWs because the system actually sells round trip fares now. So everything is a lot more complex now...

I'm also really initrigued by no2chem's post. I wouldn't be surprised if it is exactly how WN implemented this. However, since fare classes are not easily determined for most of us, it's usefulness as shorthand for determining whether one should use points or pay for a flight is somewhat limited. Also, with WN's obfusctation of the fare classes within WGA, it is tough for others to continually update it and confirm the currently applicable ratios.

I'm pretty sure of it. As I wrote within an hour of the original announcement:

no2chem's data confirms this. What I don't understand is why Southwest refused to share this information with us up front. It would have saved a lot of worrying.

I don't have the ability to update the wiki, but here were some recent flights I booked:

BWI-MSY 8/25 $78.98 5529 points
MSY-BWI 8/29 $78.51 5496 points

Both are 70 pts/$1

Looks like the redemption value stayed the same on these two routes.

You were right--I jumped the gun. I went back and checked and the rates have stayed the same on the EWR-ABQ flights.

However the LGA-ABQ the WGA availability has changed. When that went up, the rate went up to 74 pts/dollar on the 10a LGA-MDW-ABQ flight. The others remain unchanged at 70 pts/dollar.

LGA-ABQ 6/6/15 WGA: $212, base fare $176.19
Pre 4/17: 10,315 pts (booked with a base WGA fare of $147.35 x 70 pts/dollar)
Post 4/17: 13,038 pts Booked at 74 pts/dollar.

With the exception of Anytime and Biz Select, WN never advertises or publishes fare classes. It used to be contained within the fare structure on the confirmation emails back in 2011-12, but has since gone away. It looked something like this: TUS WN LAS93.95SLN7PNR 93.95, with the fare class being S.

Guess that Expertflyer subscription is a little more valuable now since you can set fare class alerts.

What I don't understand is why you don't understand SWA's secrecy about it.

This, however, is not the thread to engage in that discussion, so let's take it up elsewhere.

Sorry about that, thank you. I thought the numbers were odd and inconsistent with the thread

I think it is pretty obvious why they didn't and won't share the methodology: Tomorrow or next month, etc., they can change it (whether simply increasing the rates but keeping the fare classes as the trigger for applicable rate or making a wholesale change to the methodology). They simply don't want to be bound by any statement of what they will do.

I think it still is in confirmation emails...below was in a confirmation email of a paid fare I had in February of this year:

NYC WN CHI89.30SLNUHNR 89.30.

The fare class is also listed on the boarding pass...but, that's not helpful for us. I've avoided paying for EF so far...I'm hoping to still avoid it.

So much for being the airline that keeps things simple.

Yeah, WN tries its best to hide the fare class. A subscription to Expertflyer doesn't help, I think. It does tell you the available fare classes for Southwest (it didn't before, presumably this is because they did something to connect to GDSes that apparently publish to ATP now). It lists the fare buckets I expect:
Y K L B Q H W R O M S N T

The published fares are there now, though. Here's a WN fare rule:

It says some interesting things. First of all, it appears this fare has a 14 day advance purchase requirement. If I look at the routing rules, it is interesting as well:

It seems this rule was inserted 11MAR15 and has a 14 day advance purchase. But I don't think we can rely on EF's information. For example, I found an O fare after EF stopped displaying them, and Southwest indeed uses O fares for last minute WGA fares as well.

I would prefer not to believe you, but after two devaluations I can't dispute your inference.

Just this year. It traded with Columbus Day. Either way, we're flying WN for both.
