BUR: Loading plane from front and back?

A friend who flew BUR-LAS over the weekend says they boarded the A group from the front of the plane, and at the same time the B group from the back. I'd never heard of this before on WN. He was mad that his A-29 didn't get him the exit row window because, according to him, someone in B took it after boarding from the back. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

How many locations can load from both ends at the same time?

No place I fly can do it!

No jetways, Two outdoor jet stairs (front & back) and it makes for simultaneous boarding & deplaning. Heard about it & have done it....Many times @ Burbank.

Yup. As far as I know, Burbank is the only Southwest airport which does this. It's an awesome little airport with a very short runway.

ALB also has one gate with a dual jetbridge that can be used with non -800 aircraft. It's neat to see because the back portion is automated and swings up over the wing.

(These are not my photos - just some I found online. Hopefully you can kinda get the idea.)

It's been my experience at BUR that they board in the same order as all other airports. It is up to you as you go outside to board from either front or back. It's not that they board A's in front and B's in back at the same time. At least not as of a few months ago, the last time I was there.

Exactly what he/she said.

The process just seems to go faster with twice as many doors in-use as compared to other airports.

I did it once last year, but for the life of me can't remember the airport.

It was a single jetway that split about halfway down, and allowed passengers to board either from front or back. The boarding process was unchanged outside of that... A first, then B, etc.

I fly BUR almost weekly.

Your friend probably got stuck in line at the front door while folks stuff the overhead bins and sort out getting seated while the back door may have been flowing better.

I've lost count the number of times I've seen pax load from the back and make it all the way up to row 8/10 while people fixate on cramming into the first few rows at the front door.

Old Love Field had a double jet bridge for awhile as well and boarded from front and rear at one gate.

I've never seen them send the A group through the front door and B through the back. I always go up the back stairs at BUR though. Less fuss back there.

A tip for anyone flying to BUR, always sit in the last row. You'll be one of the first off the plane.

This has been stated many times and bears repeating: if your friend wants a guaranteed seat assignment he needs to fly another airline. Even if he buys a BS ticket there is no guarantee of exit row due to thru passengers. He has only himself to blame. I would never expect exit row aisle with A-29 though it does happen.

+1 Happens all the time. For this reason I almost always head to the back of the plane - end up getting a seat closer to the front than most who board from the front!

+1 I don't like the last row (smelly) but the 3rd row from back is great and there is never a fight for overhead space or seat saving (assuming you aren't boarding in C group)

Ok, thanks for the info. I knew that BUR used jet stairs but was unaware that they used two at the same time. Sounds like the scenario Wingrider described was the culprit.

Probably. They board in the normal order at the gate and people choose to walk to fore or aft stairs only after walking outside. Forward probably gets the pre-boarders and that can slow things.

Though throughs could still have moved to exit rows...

BUR is still my favorite WN airport. Just for the simplicity of it.
