Newark Airtrain maintenance downtime

We will be arriving at EWR and taking ground transportation to Manhattan. A couple of weeks ago we used the Newark Airport Express bus and it was really a pain. Not just the traffic but the complete disorganization in boarding procedure. We are contemplating taking the shuttle bus to Newark Penn Station and then the train to midtown this time but don't know if that would be any faster. Has anyone had experience with these options? We are budget travelers and prefer not to take a taxi. TIA

Lots of free advice, a bit of complaining, and even a Wiki here:

Thanks for the info. Looks like few folks take the Express bus to Port Authority. I can understand why.

If you are not traveling with a lot of luggage, take the #62 bus from your EWR terminal to Newark Penn Station, instead of the AirTrain shuttle bus. Schedules for the #62 can be found at: http://www.njtransit.com

From Newark Penn Station, you can take NJ Transit for the 20-minute train ride to Penn Station New York. Or, for a cheaper -- but slower -- option, you can take the PATH train from Newark Penn Station to Journal Square, and then transfer to the PATH train to 33rd Street/6th Avenue, Manhattan.

We got lucky. The shuttle bus from Terminal A was convenient with no wait time. We did have to purchase a full-fare NJT ticket EWR-New York Penn Station before boarding. At Newark Penn Station we waited 5 minutes for the train to midtown.
