At this point, without other information, I'm going to assume it's true.
Thank you for your inquiry. The Bonus Adjustment points you received are simply a Thank You for being a Rapid Rewards Member.

Reading between the lines I take that as a one time adjustment/bonus for the devaluation.
Perhaps it correlates to how many points you have in your account? When I received the 1000 points mystery bonus I had just a shade over 100,000.

It appears not to be related to Status as people of varying status have both received and not received the points.
However I doubt it is random.
Another poster has speculated it is related to your current points balance.
At present there is too little information to guess. I suppose it will be one of those Southwest mysteries like how the boarding order for A-list is decided.

No, never got an invite. I also have registered for the emails many years ago, opt in for drink coupons, have ding installed & registered (don't know why). Any other possible variables connected to a RR account?

Im going with the devaluation issue, with the "cutoff" dates being the confusion.
If you had a card as of date x/y/z, then you get 500 or 1000 points .... (that would cover quite a few cancelled cards)
but you get the above only IF your renewal date was before (or maybe after) a/b/c....
The confusion is that we have no idea what x/y/z or a/b/c are.
And it's probably somewhat "liberal" so that when they do move to 3500/7000 points per year, and you complain, they'll point to this bonus as "we didn't cheat you..."
But if your renewal (eventually) gets you 7000 or 3500 (vs 6000 or 3000), then you won't be getting the bonus, which seems a cheat at the moment.
That's my best guess.
