Wikipedia says the College of the Ozarks Airport (where the aircraft landed at) is a 3,738 foot runway. Impressive landing.

In December, Southwest Airlines announced it will cease operations at the Branson Airport in June. At that point, it will have served the airport for about 15 months.
Maybe the pilot did not get the memo that service does not end till June. :)

I have a family member on the flight!!! She said (this is through facebook) that they were waiting on stairs. They were told what happened after they landed and that the runway isn't long enough for them to take off and that they are 500 feet from a cliff!

Did Southwest hire the Dreamlifter crew?

Well, they got close. Just 6 miles north of where they wanted to be.

*Edit:

You get what you pay for :-)

Not being a pilot or anyone even closely familiar with airline labor issues, what would be the penalty to the pilot for landing at the incorrect airport?

ChevyCruze Jan 12, 2014 7:57 pm

ughh-ohhh

So is there enough runway to take off? Can imagine the new flight crew screaming Max-Power multiple times. haha

Tweets and pics from pax say it all....

Southwest acknowledges the irregularity with its customary forthrightness:

"The Southwest Airlines Pilot in command of flight #4013 safely landed at (PLK) Taney County airport this evening. The Boeing 737-700 carried 124 Customers and a crew of five and was operating as a scheduled flight from Chicago Midway to Branson.

Our ground crew from the Branson airport has arrived at the airport to take care of our Customers and their baggage. The landing was uneventful, and all Customers and Crew are safe."

Physically possible, yes - without full fuel and pax load.
Legal tonight before the feds get there? Prob not :-)

Runway takeoff limits are generally set so a plane can accelerate to takeoff/rotation speed, reject the takeoff (abort! abort!), and safely slow to a stop. A 737 can go from stop to off the ground in under 4000 feet, but not by terrible alot.

A 737 should be able to roll and takeoff from PLK while not operating with passengers. They'll do the math, and either pull the seats and fuel (if needed) and fly it out tmrw morning probably. They might need a special crew or other considerations, as well.

Is this like a surgeon replacing the wrong knee?

No harm done in the safe landing, but yikes!!

Amicus Jan 12, 2014 9:10 pm

So the pilot must have been quite skilled to land at PLK given the short runway and its location, intended for small aircraft.

Well, service to Branson ends in five months, good news for this pilot.
