Ongoing debate raised by the independent film "Blackfish". Same thing happened to the SeaWorld float in the Macy's Day Parade.

Blackfish definitely changed my opinion of Sea World. I always thought the trainers were marine biologists and I didn't know Shamu was actually a serial killer whale.

It sure seems like it would be a good business decision for SWA to sever its relationship with Sea World. The public image of Sea World has taken a huge nose dive. For SW, the business question is whether linking their image to that of Sea World's helps or hurts them. Sea World is now seen negatively by many people---it is not just animal rights activists. It is hard to imagine how the SWA-Sea World connection is good business.

I am not an animal rights activist, and have enjoyed several visits to Sea World. But, I found the BlackFish documentary shocking. It comes across as very well researched and not at all radical. Like many who saw the documentary, I decided I will not be seen in Sea World again. The documentary has been devastating to Sea World because it generated this reaction in many people. Perhaps you do not agree with this response, but from a public relations standpoint, SWA needs to recognize that Sea World is now viewed very negatively by much of the public.

I don't think these "linkages" to outrages against animals amount to much.

United seems to kill someone's dog every month or so and no one bats an eye for more than a couple days.

Says who? "Much of the public" has never even heard of Sea World, let alone heard of or care about the agenda-driven "campaign".
Perhaps if Sea World's attendance has suffered, but that does not appear to be the case...

2012 Attendance
SeaWorld Orlando Orlando, Florida 5.35m (+3.0%)
SeaWorld San Diego San Diego, California 4.44m (+3.5%)
SeaWorld of Texas San Antonio, Texas 2.67m (+3.0%)

Thanks for all of this info. I'm glad your life that you ask others to "get" allows you the time to pull up such statistics. Good for you!

I don't have a stake/opinion on the debate and haven't seen the film, but the film premiered in January 2013. The 2012 attendance stats don't measure any impact the film or associated fallout like acts canceling have had.

"Blackfish is a 2013 documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The film premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival on 19 January 2013, and was picked up by Magnolia Pictures for wider release.[2]"
