Free iPad giveaway to everyone on board?
Just had a friend post that a SW flight to BWI gave away an iPad to every passenger.
Is this normal? And here I was thinking my international first class ipad case was a cool gift...

It looks like it's true.

Douglas County-based Dish announced the deal aboard a Southwest flight from Boston to Baltimore, with the "Boston Guys" from the satellite-TV company's "Hoppa" commercials handing out iPads to more than 100 travelers.

I think this is along the lines that if you have big chance of recouping your initial investment costs plus interest in $5-6 per-passenger increments, get a big corporate sponsor to foot the bill.
bad news for passengers means advertising. lots and lots of advertising.
"tough each Southwest customer three to four messsages before they even travel..."
new benefit needed for A+ members: commercial free wifi content

My flight today LAS-MDW (an 800) had the Free TV from Dish offer. It included the live streaming TV and the video on demand shows, and it worked somewhat well (freezing a couple times, requiring a reboot on my laptop.) They make you watch a Dish ad, but only one. There's also a link to a new subscriber offer (as mention at the link referenced above) and a separate offer for 500 RR points just for giving them your contact info (after which you'll probably receive marketing).

EDIT: My friend was traveling with his seven year old and his six month old. All received iPads! Guess that baby can drool on it.
