Frequently Asked Questions about Rapid Rewards Visa

1. What are the different card types?
non-business Plus, non-business Premier, business Plus, and business Premier.
Premier cards have a higher annual fee but give 6000 anniversary bonus points vs. 3000 points for the Plus cards. It is generally agreed that you will get the bonus for a new account if you have not had that particular type of RR Visa card before, but Chase appears to be in the process of changing their policies (see below).

Note that prior to RR-2.0, the two types of RR Visa cards were "Classic" ($29 to $39 annual fee) and "Signature" ($59 to $69 annual fee). Plus and Premier are new products for purposes of the (soon to be retired?) "One bonus per product" rule.

2. Is there a zero annual fee version?
No.

3. Can I "churn" these cards? How often can I reapply for the same type card and get the signup bonus?
The official rule has recently changed more than once. Closely check the T&C of your offer as different rules may apply to concurrently available offers. The Inflight offer linked above states:
This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past twenty four months.
Referral offers have been seen with a limit of one individual and one business bonus per lifetime (although T&C read by the CSR taking the application differed from those printed on the referral offer).

Actual results sometimes differ from the official rule. People have reported receiving the bonus a second time on the same card type at various intervals even when the bonus was officially once per lifefime per product. Please post your results here.

As of mid-May 2015 Chase has cracked down on applicants who appear to have much less than average attachment to their cards. Specifically, more than 5 applications within the past 24 months is the approximate cutoff: Chase crackdown on churners: Please report your RR Visa approvals/denials here

4. Can I cancel the card and still collect the anniversary bonus?
Yes. Reasonable people disagree on whether this crosses the line of exploiting the card issuer. The anniversary bonus is described a reward for having been a cardmember for the past year, not as a reward for paying the next year's annual fee. Based on that description, the bonus has been earned even if you then cancel the card. As a practical matter, there is a window of only a couple weeks to accomplish this. The bonus points will post on the billing date of the statement containing your new annual fee, which will have posted earlier in the billing cycle. You have 30 days from posting of the annual fee to cancel the card and have the new fee refunded.

5. Does the annual fee count toward the spending threshold for the signup bonus?
No.

6. When will my signup bonus post to my Rapid Rewards account?
If you have met the spending threshold at least several days before your statement date, the bonus will normally post 2 days after your statement date, not when you actually spent the money! Cutting the timing or the spending amount too closely is not advisable. Mistakes can happen.

7. My statement shows sufficient purchases to meet the spending threshold. Why didn't I receive the bonus?
This can happen if you met the spending threshold just a few days before the statement date. It appears that accounts are flagged for meeting the spending threshold independently of the statement generation process and less frequently than daily.

8. How can I determine my statement date?
You should call Chase (phone number on back of card) to check your next statement date. Credit card companies are now required to have payments due on the same numerical day of each month, which means closing dates vary throughout the year. (Before reforms enacted after the financial crisis, RR Visa cards had constant closing dates rather than constant due dates.) The closing date should remain within the same small range unless you request a change of your payment due date. When you request a change, Chase normally can delay your next statement but cannot accelerate it. If you are unwisely taking the risk of cutting your timing too close, you should call Chase more than once to confirm your next statement date.

9. I accidentally crossed the spending threshold in December rather than January. Can I return a large purchase to bring my spending back below the threshold?
Unlikely. It appears that the sweep to check spending threshold does not un-flag an account previously flagged as meeting the threshold. It's not even clear whether the sweep counts returns at all. If you realize the error before the statement closes and you have a payment due date change available, you might be able to push the December closing date into January.

10. Can I apply for a credit card in my wife's name but my Rapid Rewards number, so that the points funnel into my account?
People have tried this. Some have succeeded. Others have reported that Chase closed the account and posted no Rapid Rewards points. Do you feel lucky? Programs can become very aggressive when they suspect members of defrauding the program by using non-matching names. When you game the system you are only on solid ground if you follow the rules to the letter. Breaking the rules means that the program can penalize you if they want to, and believe me: They want to.

11. Can I scam this system in any other way? I just had a clever idea.
There is nothing new under the sun here on FlyerTalk. If it relates to established program rules and it isn't discussed here you can be confident your idea will not work.

Thanks Willbur and daw. That's good news. May have to reconsider, no pun intended, trying a phone referral.

Hi All,
I just wanted to share my application results - and ask a couple questions. Today I applied and was instantly approved for both the Chase Southwest Plus (by phone) and Premier (by link) Personal cards today. Yay!

Anyway, I would like to get one or two more cards soon (preferably Chase, and maybe another Southwest). Why? I'll have a big income tax bill (likely $6k or so) to pay with my credit cards and would like to get some minimum spend bonuses that way - also would like to focus on Chase cards before I hit 5 cards for the 5/24 rule. But, I need to receive the card(s) fairly soon to make that happen (before the tax payment deadline).

So my questions...

1. Has anyone been able to get the Southwest Business Premier card shortly after getting the other two personal Southwest cards? What do you think my odds are? The only other Chase card I have is the regular Ink Business (not Plus).
2. Two Chase Southwest personal cards in one day = 1 hard pull. Would two Chase *business* cards in one day be just one hard pull? Even if one is co-branded (Southwest Premier) and one isn't (Ink Plus) or a different co-brand (United MileagePlus Explorer)?
3. If just one, which Chase card might I be most likely to get auto-approved for? The ones I mentioned above or Sapphire Preferred Personal?
4. I need to do this soon (for the income tax payment), but how long should I wait after today's approval? A week or two? A month (probably too close to tax day)?

Thanks,
--Kyle

Sorry for the double post - just wary about the Southwest Plus phone number that is floating around. I called Chase Sapphire and two reps confirmed that the 1 888 number is not a Chase number. I have also asked several people to provide me with a screenshot or forward of the original email / secured message where they pulled the number from, but have not received a reply. Thoughts? Can any FT veterans confirm this?

I'm certainly no FT Vet, but see post 2792 here for verification of the Plus call-in number by a FT Vet: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...l#post25720626

Normal Chase agents won't confirm the number since it's a private referral number and not a public number so it's not something that's in their directory. This is nothing new and has always been the case. The number itself changes from time to time as the offer changes (they end one number and reactivate another number they own). When I signed up for the Plus I used a phone referral from someone else - that number/offer was deactivated but it's the same process. Everyone who has completed the app and then received the card recently can attest that it's legit. I literally had my mother sign up with it last week.

Thanks for your help. I applied, and then called the main app status line, which confirmed the two outstanding apps. Sorry for hitting the panic button - just wanted to make sure.

No worries - glad it worked and you were able to confirm. Hopefully serves as additional confirmation for others.

Chase RR Biz Premier - Denied, Recon, Now What?

Hi All,
I'm trying to help my girlfriend get her Companion Pass (for me to travel with her), but it isn't going very well. Here's what's happened:

1. She canceled her SW Premier Personal card on January 10th (had received the bonus well over 2 years ago).
2. She was auto-approved for the Plus by phone on January 25th.
3. She applied for the Business Premier a few days later and got a denial letter.
4. Around Feb 4th, she called recon, answered some questions about the business and was told they'd send it to someone to review again and she would either receive the card OR a denial letter in 7-10 business days.
5. It's been about 14 business days and she hasn't heard anything.

Any ideas on what to do next?
A. Call in to check on reconsideration status?
B. Try for the Premier Personal now (it's been well over a month since canceling the old one)?
C. Continue waiting for denial or the card itself? If ultimately denied, try for the Premier Personal - or wait a certain amount of time? How long?

But... We're running out of time to get the CP for travel this summer; considering a trip at the end of May! I'd appreciate your thoughts on what to do now. FYI, she has great-excellent credit, but she doesn't have a business. She has a business idea and plan, and she applied for the card based on that (to start tracking business expenses separately, etc.). Thanks!

I would call again for an update. They sat on mine for weeks before I called. She could also apply for the premier since it has been over 2 years. I have referrals for 50,000 if she needs one pm me first name and email address.

Obviously too late for you; but, for others -- the conventional wisdom is to apply for the business card before the personal card because the business card is harder to get approved.

Thanks guys. Do you think that the business card being in limbo would have any / much of an effect on a Personal Premier application? If not, I think I'll just have her apply for the personal premier today or maybe on Monday and hope she gets that. I have a feeling calling on the Premier Business might not do much good... Or that it still might take awhile. Maybe she'd be auto-approved for the Personal Premier since she had it a month and a half ago and was auto-approved for the Plus? Thanks,

Calling may help with the business and if she has good credit the premier card should not be a problem for auto-approval

Just some general questions (not fretting over things). Got a PLUS referral, called the #800 and applied. The rep said I'd get a mail response in 7-10 days and that they were not doing instant approvals over the phone (??). OK.

that was on the 16th of Feb.

I called the #888 status # to find out the status, says I'll get a response in 30 days in the mail.

Now, I've got credit monitoring (NO FREEZES on any bureaus) from many sites (long story, mainly because of all the data breaches from my health insurance, and other credit cards they get me "free" monitoring for 2 years), and none of them have picked up a hard inquiry.

I have a FICO (yes, actual FICO, not some weird credit score that's not FICO) score of 810/807/812 from the 3 bureaus.

I have a Chase Amazon Visa, Chase Freedom (well 2 actually because they converted my Amtrak Visa over to the Freedom) and a regular Chase Sapphire card. All of these have been "old" (over 2 years, although the Freedom card is new in the sense that they converted a 5 year old Amtrak card to it).

Are they just this slow? I would've thought if they were denying/whatever, that the credit score hard inquiry would've hit by now.

Or does Chase have some "internal" thing they go through first and THEN do a credit pull?

I did a plus last week and received an instant over the phone. I am not sure why you received the response that you did.
