Frequently Asked Questions about Rapid Rewards Visa

1. What are the different card types?
non-business Plus, non-business Premier, business Plus, and business Premier.
Premier cards have a higher annual fee but give 6000 anniversary bonus points vs. 3000 points for the Plus cards. It is generally agreed that you will get the bonus for a new account if you have not had that particular type of RR Visa card before, but Chase appears to be in the process of changing their policies (see below).

Note that prior to RR-2.0, the two types of RR Visa cards were "Classic" ($29 to $39 annual fee) and "Signature" ($59 to $69 annual fee). Plus and Premier are new products for purposes of the (soon to be retired?) "One bonus per product" rule.

2. Is there a zero annual fee version?
No.

3. Can I "churn" these cards? How often can I reapply for the same type card and get the signup bonus?
The official rule has recently changed more than once. Closely check the T&C of your offer as different rules may apply to concurrently available offers. The Inflight offer linked above states:
This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past twenty four months.
Referral offers have been seen with a limit of one individual and one business bonus per lifetime (although T&C read by the CSR taking the application differed from those printed on the referral offer).

Actual results sometimes differ from the official rule. People have reported receiving the bonus a second time on the same card type at various intervals even when the bonus was officially once per lifefime per product. Please post your results here.

As of mid-May 2015 Chase has cracked down on applicants who appear to have much less than average attachment to their cards. Specifically, more than 5 applications within the past 24 months is the approximate cutoff: Chase crackdown on churners: Please report your RR Visa approvals/denials here

4. Can I cancel the card and still collect the anniversary bonus?
Yes. Reasonable people disagree on whether this crosses the line of exploiting the card issuer. The anniversary bonus is described a reward for having been a cardmember for the past year, not as a reward for paying the next year's annual fee. Based on that description, the bonus has been earned even if you then cancel the card. As a practical matter, there is a window of only a couple weeks to accomplish this. The bonus points will post on the billing date of the statement containing your new annual fee, which will have posted earlier in the billing cycle. You have 30 days from posting of the annual fee to cancel the card and have the new fee refunded.

5. Does the annual fee count toward the spending threshold for the signup bonus?
No.

6. When will my signup bonus post to my Rapid Rewards account?
If you have met the spending threshold at least several days before your statement date, the bonus will normally post 2 days after your statement date, not when you actually spent the money! Cutting the timing or the spending amount too closely is not advisable. Mistakes can happen.

7. My statement shows sufficient purchases to meet the spending threshold. Why didn't I receive the bonus?
This can happen if you met the spending threshold just a few days before the statement date. It appears that accounts are flagged for meeting the spending threshold independently of the statement generation process and less frequently than daily.

8. How can I determine my statement date?
You should call Chase (phone number on back of card) to check your next statement date. Credit card companies are now required to have payments due on the same numerical day of each month, which means closing dates vary throughout the year. (Before reforms enacted after the financial crisis, RR Visa cards had constant closing dates rather than constant due dates.) The closing date should remain within the same small range unless you request a change of your payment due date. When you request a change, Chase normally can delay your next statement but cannot accelerate it. If you are unwisely taking the risk of cutting your timing too close, you should call Chase more than once to confirm your next statement date.

9. I accidentally crossed the spending threshold in December rather than January. Can I return a large purchase to bring my spending back below the threshold?
Unlikely. It appears that the sweep to check spending threshold does not un-flag an account previously flagged as meeting the threshold. It's not even clear whether the sweep counts returns at all. If you realize the error before the statement closes and you have a payment due date change available, you might be able to push the December closing date into January.

10. Can I apply for a credit card in my wife's name but my Rapid Rewards number, so that the points funnel into my account?
People have tried this. Some have succeeded. Others have reported that Chase closed the account and posted no Rapid Rewards points. Do you feel lucky? Programs can become very aggressive when they suspect members of defrauding the program by using non-matching names. When you game the system you are only on solid ground if you follow the rules to the letter. Breaking the rules means that the program can penalize you if they want to, and believe me: They want to.

11. Can I scam this system in any other way? I just had a clever idea.
There is nothing new under the sun here on FlyerTalk. If it relates to established program rules and it isn't discussed here you can be confident your idea will not work.

Hello I have been following the forum since 2013, but this is my first time posting for advice. Thank you in advance for your help.
I have been planning my strategy for obtaining a second companion pass for 2016/2017. I earned my first companion pass during 2014/2015. Previously applied for SW Premiere Personal and Premiere Business, points posted Jan 13, 2014 for both cards.

My goal:
Apply for SW Personal PLUS now using a referral, Jan 2016
Apply for SW Personal Premiere after the 2 year mark when the points posted, apply Feb 1, 2016.

I have not applied for any credit cards since April 2015. However, I am over the Chase 5/24 rule.
Credit Score low 800’s

British Airway April 2015
US Airway April 2015
Barclay May 2014
Citi Executive July 2014
Chase Ink Business Bold Oct 2014
Chase INK Business Bold June 2014
Authorized user on my husband’s account for Chase Sapphire and Barclay.

My questions:
1) Do you think I have a decent chance to be approved for the PLUS card? I am worried about having to call Chase for the personal PLUS referral. I have lowered all credit limits for my personal chase credit cards to prepare for online applications, hoping for auto approvals. But, if I have to call Chase, I am worried I will be declined since I am over the 5/24 rule.

2) Do you think my plan for the second Companion pass is a good one? I don’t want to make any mistakes. Getting the SW companion pass is my top priority this year. So I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi there. Long time reader, first time poster. I am confused about a strategy using the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Business card.

I hope this is not too confusing.....I applied for and was accepted for the SW Rapid Rewards Business Card on 12/14, cancelled a year later, and it has currently been 20 months since I received the sign up bonus. This was for "business A".

As a result of that bonus, and combined with other sign ups, We have been enjoying the companion pass until it expired at the end of 2015. We are going for the companion pass again, only this time in my wifes name.

Therefore, My wife recently applied for the Southwest AirlinesŪ Rapid RewardsŪ Premier Business card, was accepted, and earned the sign up bonus. She applied using a different business name and EIN, for our purposes we will call it "Business B"

Now I would like for her to apply for the personal card, although I fear she may be denied due to average credit. Instead I would like her to apply for a second Southwest AirlinesŪ Rapid RewardsŪ Premier Business card, using Business A. (the same business I used)

Q: Do you anticipate a problem with my wife getting the second bonus for Business A? My thinking is that I applied originally using Business A, not her. So I am hopeful the bonus will be available to her. My fear is that Chase will not award her the bonus, since I got the bonus for that business less than 24 months ago (20 months ago).

Thanks for your help.

I agree with your concern.

I think your wife is better off trying to apply for one of the personal cards (plus or premier)...both offer 50,000 with referral signups now. (PM Me if you need help in this regard by clicking here)

The individual card for your wife is a better (more guaranteed) bet because you will not be in violation of the terms for the 50,000 bonus points.

If she gets rejected, then I would shift to the business card #2 strategy -- might even want to wait out the 4 months.

Just signed up for Premier. Looking for a Plus referral if I can get the 50k a second time within a short period.
Yes, you can get both bonuses to get 100,000 miles (assuming you havent had these bonuses previously in the past 24 months).

Many people do it.

You can apply for both at the same time. Or wait for the second one.

Up to you, and depends on how quickly you can meet your minimum spend. If it is difficult for you to spend $2,000 plus $2,000 in three months, then do the spend consecutively (apply for PLUS in 2-3 months).

Good luck.

Anniversary points posting timeframe?

My southwest card annual fee just posted. I was hoping to cancel the card when the anniversary bonus points post to my SW account. Anyone know how long it takes after the annual fee posts? thanks.

The 5/24 rule doesn't apply to co-branded cards like the Southwest cards.

Aside from considerations re credit score, previous Chase apps, etc., is there any reason one *shouldn't* apply for the Personal Plus and Personal Premier within a couple of weeks of each other? These would be first time applications for any co-branded SW card. Thank you!

Not sure if I made a mistake. I just applied and was approved for plus and premiere today. I didn't have a rapid rewards number and they didn't tell me one was created after the first approval. When I called for the second application, I didn't provide a rapid rewards number again. I went ahead and created a rapid rewards account after (no idea why I did this backwards). Did I just create confusion for myself, and need to somehow connect everything or call? Or will they just connect my new rapid rewards to my new cards?

My experiance is that if you didn't gve Chase a RR number they will create one and you will need to call Southwest to combine the accounts. Chase sometimes creates new RR accounts even when they have or should have the existing one. Chase claims they can't change the RR account number on their end and they continue to use the new account number, apparently Southwest automatically transfers the point on their side. It mostly works fine except my wife's annual bonus once went into totally different RR account which should have been closed years ago.

...It's been a whole 72 hours since I applied for the 50k Premier through referral link and got the "call immediately to verify" message. Automated response states they'll notify my in two weeks. Can I wipe the sweat from my brow yet or is Chase still watching? My eyes are starting to hurt...

Please know that currently:

----For SWA PLUS card ($69 annual fee) 50,000 bonus offer referrals, there is only a phone-in application associated with the 50,000 bonus referral program.

----For SWA PREMIER card ($99 annual fee) 50,000 bonus offer referrals, there is either a phone-in application OR a web-link online application option.

If you are interested in either type of referral, please PM me by clicking here.

I have successfully obtained a companion pass and have regularly navigated friends, co-workers and family in getting their companion passes too over the past 3 years.

Please just specify which you want (or both) and if you want an online link, please send your email address too by sending a personal message to me here.

I will promptly respond.

Thanks,
John

OK thanks, that means I could potentially have 3 RR numbers now, great. Guess I'll just wait and see if I receive anything in the mail with the card. As for now, I already see my credit card listed on the Chase website, but no mention of a RR #. I'll post back in the case anyone else makes the same mistake.

We got a referral from Willbur within minutes, and everything went very smoothly. THANK YOU!! So excited for the companion pass soon (we were approved for the premier and the plus--I can't believe they approved us for both of the personal cards on the same day, but it worked for us).

If you have any favorite Southwest vacation spots, I'd love to hear about them.
