Frequently Asked Questions about Rapid Rewards Visa

1. What are the different card types?
non-business Plus, non-business Premier, business Plus, and business Premier.
Premier cards have a higher annual fee but give 6000 anniversary bonus points vs. 3000 points for the Plus cards. It is generally agreed that you will get the bonus for a new account if you have not had that particular type of RR Visa card before, but Chase appears to be in the process of changing their policies (see below).

Note that prior to RR-2.0, the two types of RR Visa cards were "Classic" ($29 to $39 annual fee) and "Signature" ($59 to $69 annual fee). Plus and Premier are new products for purposes of the (soon to be retired?) "One bonus per product" rule.

2. Is there a zero annual fee version?
No.

3. Can I "churn" these cards? How often can I reapply for the same type card and get the signup bonus?
The official rule has recently changed more than once. Closely check the T&C of your offer as different rules may apply to concurrently available offers. The Inflight offer linked above states:
This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past twenty four months.
Referral offers have been seen with a limit of one individual and one business bonus per lifetime (although T&C read by the CSR taking the application differed from those printed on the referral offer).

Actual results sometimes differ from the official rule. People have reported receiving the bonus a second time on the same card type at various intervals even when the bonus was officially once per lifefime per product. Please post your results here.

As of mid-May 2015 Chase has cracked down on applicants who appear to have much less than average attachment to their cards. Specifically, more than 5 applications within the past 24 months is the approximate cutoff: Chase crackdown on churners: Please report your RR Visa approvals/denials here

4. Can I cancel the card and still collect the anniversary bonus?
Yes. Reasonable people disagree on whether this crosses the line of exploiting the card issuer. The anniversary bonus is described a reward for having been a cardmember for the past year, not as a reward for paying the next year's annual fee. Based on that description, the bonus has been earned even if you then cancel the card. As a practical matter, there is a window of only a couple weeks to accomplish this. The bonus points will post on the billing date of the statement containing your new annual fee, which will have posted earlier in the billing cycle. You have 30 days from posting of the annual fee to cancel the card and have the new fee refunded.

5. Does the annual fee count toward the spending threshold for the signup bonus?
No.

6. When will my signup bonus post to my Rapid Rewards account?
If you have met the spending threshold at least several days before your statement date, the bonus will normally post 2 days after your statement date, not when you actually spent the money! Cutting the timing or the spending amount too closely is not advisable. Mistakes can happen.

7. My statement shows sufficient purchases to meet the spending threshold. Why didn't I receive the bonus?
This can happen if you met the spending threshold just a few days before the statement date. It appears that accounts are flagged for meeting the spending threshold independently of the statement generation process and less frequently than daily.

8. How can I determine my statement date?
You should call Chase (phone number on back of card) to check your next statement date. Credit card companies are now required to have payments due on the same numerical day of each month, which means closing dates vary throughout the year. (Before reforms enacted after the financial crisis, RR Visa cards had constant closing dates rather than constant due dates.) The closing date should remain within the same small range unless you request a change of your payment due date. When you request a change, Chase normally can delay your next statement but cannot accelerate it. If you are unwisely taking the risk of cutting your timing too close, you should call Chase more than once to confirm your next statement date.

9. I accidentally crossed the spending threshold in December rather than January. Can I return a large purchase to bring my spending back below the threshold?
Unlikely. It appears that the sweep to check spending threshold does not un-flag an account previously flagged as meeting the threshold. It's not even clear whether the sweep counts returns at all. If you realize the error before the statement closes and you have a payment due date change available, you might be able to push the December closing date into January.

10. Can I apply for a credit card in my wife's name but my Rapid Rewards number, so that the points funnel into my account?
People have tried this. Some have succeeded. Others have reported that Chase closed the account and posted no Rapid Rewards points. Do you feel lucky? Programs can become very aggressive when they suspect members of defrauding the program by using non-matching names. When you game the system you are only on solid ground if you follow the rules to the letter. Breaking the rules means that the program can penalize you if they want to, and believe me: They want to.

11. Can I scam this system in any other way? I just had a clever idea.
There is nothing new under the sun here on FlyerTalk. If it relates to established program rules and it isn't discussed here you can be confident your idea will not work.

Ok, thanks; that's probably the issue. Met spend on the 22nd, Statement date was the 24th (although the statement does show the 22nd purchases), spend points posted on the 1st. That's ok; even if I had the bonus, even with my hotel transfer I was 800 miles short anyway; so it was going to have to wait for next months transfer in any case.

Here is my update:

Three days ago, I was finally approved for the SW Premier card (I applied via link; randomly popped up on my online account) for $19K credit limit (bringing my total to $50K across 4 Chase cards).

My application for SW Plus card, which was originally denied (they were considering a CLI as a new approval/inquiry; the rep I spoke to said he was going to recommend approval pending secondary review - 24-48 hrs), has switched from pending 7-10 business days to pending approximately 2 weeks.

I hate the waiting game. I suspect that the rep accidentally recommended the Premier for approval (not the Plus, as he was referring to). What should I do? Should I lower my credit line? I also now have $0 balances on 3/4 cards (and will keep them like that) just in case. What should my strategy be if I get denied (targeting the SW companion pass - I know I am late)?

As always, thanks again for all your help.

Datapoint:

Yesterday applied for both Personal and Biz Premier together. Personal approved right away for $2k limit LOL....good enough. The Biz one went pending, called today and they denied it on account of having too many new accounts in the past 12 months. I've had around 10 in the last 12 months, two with Chase.

Even suggesting CL swap with one of my Inks didn't convince them. Not sure if it's worth calling again. What pisses me off is the CSR first wasted 15min of my time grilling me about the details of my business like I've never been questioned before...by any bank. Why bother if the denial will have nothing to do with my income? They're idiots over there.

I applied for the card a few months ago. Credit line is $(more than I could ever possibly need).

50K points posted earlier this week.

For reference, copying and pasting my comment/story from the Chase application thread. Hope it helps!

Data point:
1. Applied for SW Premier on 2/17 (via link) and SW Plus on 2/19 (via phone) - both went into pending (one 2 weeks and one 7-10 business days)
2. On 2/25, I opened a chase checking account (took advantage of the sign-up bonus) with an eye toward approvals - YMMV
3. On 3/1, I was finally approved for the SW Premier card (I applied via link; randomly popped up on my online account) for $19K credit limit (bringing my total to $50K across 4 Chase cards).
4. On 3/1 My application for SW Plus card (applied via phone), which was originally denied (they were considering a CLI as a new approval/inquiry; the rep I spoke to said he was going to recommend approval pending secondary review - 24-48 hrs), switched from pending 7-10 business days to pending approximately 2 weeks
5. On 3/3 I asked for a credit limit decrease via SM for my new SW Premier to $10K (from $19K), and paid off 3/4 credit cards to have $0 balances - YMMV
6. On 3/3 end of day, I was approved for SW Plus card (showed up on my online account) for $20K credit limit, will ask for a decrease (targeting Hyatt and IHG next)

Thank you all for your help.

Well just an FYI:

Applied over the phone for the Plus on 2/18/16. Was told they don't do instant approvals and that I would get a letter in 7-10 days.

None of my credit bureaus show an inquiry for the entire month of Feb/March

I called the automated line to check status (pretty much every day for the last 10 days) and get the: We'll let you know in 30 days (different than 7-10).

So today I called the reconsideration line to ask what's going on. Apparently they (Chase) is too lazy to actually call you and ask if you want to re-allocate your credit line (I have like 5 cards with them). So I got that taken care of and am approved.

So if you don't hear in 7-10 days, maybe consider calling the reconsideration line to see what's up.

I still continue to call Chase immediately when going pending and has still worked out each time.

Also, as a note just so people don't get confused, I think the agent told you they don't do instant approvals just to make you feel better about going pending. They definitely do have instant approvals over the phone (it's the same as doing it online) and seems to be about 50/50 among people I've referred.

Sort of the same scenario here at least as far as applying goes.. I was approved a few weeks ago for the Premier personal with a 28K CL. Pending on Business which I applied for right after the personal. A week later the denial letter came stating too many apps.

I called and was told that I already had all the business credit they would extend me. Long story short, we closed my Marriott Business and he approved the SW Business for $5K which is the minimum CL to open a business card. Agent couldn't have been nicer and there was not one question about my business which was a bar that I sold years ago.

Plan was to apply for the Premier and the Plus today before any changes in April. Submitted application online for Premier with a 50k referral link and application went pending with a 30 day timeframe. I called recon and the CSR was unable to assist, he just said it was with their verification team and I would hear in 1-2 weeks.

Any insight on this? Should I HUCA? Is it safe to apply for the Plus right now (via phone with referral) or should I wait until a status on the Premier? Want to make sure to get these in before the 5/24 change.

Thanks!

I'd personally call again on the Premier and see if you can get it approved, and then apply for the Plus. I like that better than having two pending.

I finally received my business card and after spending the 2000 I called and had my payment date moved up to the middle of the month. The points for my 2000 I spent posted to my account but not the 50,000 bonus. Is this normal? I also would like to know how long it takes to receive your companion pass after the 110,000 points post in your account. Thanks

So I haven't been keeping up for a bit but are there no more referrals for the Plus and that you have to apply by phone?

You don't want to change your closing date too close to your spending settlement date. You will have to wait till next statement closing. CP is rewarded within a day from personal experience.

Correct, the only way to currently get 50k is via phone referral.
