Hotel in Charlestown SC
Hi All,
any recommendations at the cheaper end of the market for Charleston SC. There are lots of options and i am not to familiar with the area. I have a conference down in the old district so anything within walking distance would be great. cheers |
Well, one suggestion of a nice property in the historic district at the lower end of the market price-wise is the Holiday Inn at 125 Calhoun Street. A quick check for the second weekend in September revealed rates in the $120 per night range, which I consider to be good for Charleston.
I really like the hotel's location, but you should be aware that it's kind of at the edge of the historic district and not smack in the middle of it, so it may not be entirely convenient to where your meeting is. For instance, it's probably half a mile from Charleston Place, which I would consider walking distance, but you may not. You would be a little closer to the C of C campus if that's where your meeting is. If your meeting is at MUSC, you would be three-quarters of a mile to a mile away. I hope this helps. Enjoy Charleston! |
The rate of $120 per night is good indeed for Charleston, but EWC-JMU is right in that this property is at the edge of the historic area. You might try looking into Elliott House on Queen St. I have never stayed there, but tripadvisor gives good reviews and it's location is excellent if you want be in the middle of old Charleston. Also, Mills House. I have stayed there 3 or 4 times and the rooms are a little tired, but it is one of the old original hotels and has a lot of charm...have been told that some refurbishment of rooms has been done. That would cost a little more, but if it comes in under $150, that would be a great rate.Note that rates can go up quite a bit on weekends, so look for a rate change then.
Edited to add that my preferred hotel is the Renaissance, which is quite good, but getting increasingly more expensive. The Doubletree (downtown area near Market) has a new section of rooms built around 2002...the older ones are definitely not as good. The Hampton Inn Downtown has unusually high rates for a Hampton Inn...it is a little farther up from the Holiday Inn and the Embassy Suites I find to be depressing. There's not a lot of choice at the cheaper end, unfortunately. |
VA747's comments are spot on. I agree in every respect (esp. with the comment re the ES -- the old Citadel deserved better treatment. And the "pool" at that place, ...?).
I also suggest the Venue Inn on Vendue Range. I really enjoyed my stay there a couple of years ago, and it's well-located. I'll say, however, that it's taken a beating recently on TripAdvisor. |
