Fun stuff in OBX

JCooke and I are headed to OBX in June (a whole week trip for once!) and I'm wondering what kind (if any) fun stuff there is to do while we are there. He has visited a few times, but this is my first. He's more of a relax and chill kind of vacationer where I am always wanting to be on the move doing/seeing new things. I understand this is a pretty laid back vacation area, but any fun ideas would be very appreciated. :D

OK... for those of us who are abbreviation challenged... and really don't want to do the search, where is OBX? :)

P.S. Wharvey- Could you send me a Columbini's Chicken Finger sub?

Wright Brothers National Monument
Jockey's Ridge State Park - cool sand dunes & kite flying
Currituck Lighthouse (Corolla)
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

That's about all we do, other than the obligatory beach stuff. No OBX trip would be complete without a few Brew Thru visits. :p

Ahhh... The Wright Bros. Museum... Will remind me of my RDG-PIT trip in the Beech 1900. Fun times! That would probably be something JCooke would find interesting being a flying fanatic and all. :D

If you're staying in the Corolla area, there is a group that offers ATV tours of the area just off the beach where wild horses are found--we did this and it was lots of fun. I believe there are also several companies that lead sea kayaking tours (beginners OK) in and around the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge. We also took a dolphin spotting tour with a local marine biologist who gives them to raise money for his research--this was a neat trip and we saw *lots* of wild dolphins. Manteo has a small but very nice aquarium.

Agreed, Brew Thru visits are always a good time. ^

I haven't done the ATV rides but a couple of my other family members did them when we were down there a few years ago - positive feedback on them.

One thing that I haven't done yet that I think I'll force  the 'diva to do is mini-golf down there on the real grass.

If your still feeling adventurous half a decade later, then try kiteboarding. absolutely a blast!

The Lost Colony performance on Manteo Island.

Plenty of offshore fishing opportunities, but if that isn't your thing, go down to the Oregon Inlet (at the base of the bridge to Hatteras Island after Pea Island) and watch them bring in the catch (roughly 2-4 pm).

Other lighthouse - Bodie Island Lighthouse - was being renovated last I was down, but worth a visit if you are visiting the National Wildlife Refuge on your way to points south.

For flying fanatics, you could take a plane tour of the area, taking off from the KDH airport -- the closest airport to the actual first flight (hundreds of meters away) -- and in the shadow of the First Flight monument (which is an historic piece of early 20th century architecture in its own right).
