Thanksgiving in Atlanta as a non-local - what to do?
Hopefully someone can give me some advice here...we are traveling to Atlanta over the Thanksgiving holiday (OK, ok...to take advantage of the Black friday sales...;-)) where we have neither friends or family. So to be able to do anything that day we are looking for some place that has a public turkey-day dinner or so on. From last year's experience (when we went to the DC-area) it seems to me that almost every place is closed that day, even Mc Donalds closes early. So does anyone have any idea what to do that day/evening???
Any suggestions would be very welcome! If it makes a difference, we will be staying at the Embassy Suites Perimeter...

Following are some restaurants mentioned in an "Atlanta Journal" Thanksgiving article last year. And, others I like that are usually open on Thanksgiving Day include:

Most, if not all of these restaurants have a website, so do a "google" search if you want more info. Prices and ambience vary widely, from, for example, The Colonnade ($10-$15/person in a 50's-era dining room) to Park 75 in the Four Seasons Hotel (see prices below). A number of these places serve traditional "Southern-style" food, while others serve a more upscale version of Thanksgiving dinner.
You didn't say if you will have an auto at your disposal, but even if you do, you'll want to consider how far you want to drive for a meal. Use Mapquest to get directions and mileage estimates from the Embassy Suites. If you don't have an auto, Chequers and McCormick & Schmick's are the only restaurants listed that are within close proximity of your hotel - about a mile - but you'll need to take a cab anyway. Keep in mind that all these restaurants have been open for Thanksgiving lunch/dinner in the past, but that could change this year, so check with them first.
As for something to do that evening, it's fun to go to Lenox Square Mall for the annual Christmas tree lighting atop the Rich's-Macy's store. Start checking the Atlanta Journal online at least a week before you leave for times and event updates - www.ajc.com.
Last, I'm sure you'll want to check out the newish Bloomingdale's store in Perimeter Mall - it's beauuuuutiful!
