Suggestions for Savannah, etc?

Any restaurant recommendations for great local cuisine (seafood, Southern, Brunch, etc.) in Savannah, Beaufort, Fripp, or Hilton Head? Not looking to bust the bank nor to dine in a place requiring a coat and tie, etc. The group will include several adults and may include several pre-teens (thus a brief comment on how appropriate the recommendations would be for the kids would be helpful).

Thanks.

Thanks.

We enjoyed a low country boil a couple of times while in Savannah for a nephew's wedding. The first time was put on by relatives of the bride down on the beach late at night after the reception - fabulous! :)

The second was at the Crab Shack on Tybee Island. The bride, a Savannah girl, didn't think much of the Crab Shack, but the two of us thought it was a reasonable approximation of the "real thing" we had enjoyed a couple of night earlier.

I'd be interested to hear if there are better places for that particular feast:

A great casual place for kids of all ages, unless they dislike eating with their hands and throwing the leftovers in a bucket in the table... :D

Undoubtedly the finest restaurant for Southern cooking in Savannah is "Lady & Sons" on Congress Street.

I had their buffet lunch and found myself in Southern Heaven. Advice: Go early in the afternoon or you are going to find yourself waiting a LONG time for a table.

(If you need any more of a recommendation, just notice this one fact: At noon, there is a line of people waiting for a table while the nearby restaurants would be happy to seat them immediately.)

Lady & Sons is in the historic market area of Savannah, so after eating you will be able to enjoy strolling through the streets.

Savannah Restaurant: Elizabeth's on 37th

Elizabeth's is probably one of my favorite restaurants of all time. Worth the trip.

Worth the trip? Yes. Worth wearing the required tie and jacket? Never!

They only do brunch/lunch on Sunday, I think. We walked by at around 5 or 6 PM and they were closing up. The line the following morning was daunting. We walked by at around 10:30 AM and there were hundreds of would be diners waiting. I can't imagine those at the end got their hoped for table. In addition to those in line, there was a crowd gathered on the sidewalk across the street waiting for their appointed time. I'm sure it's nice, but I'm not standing for hours in 95 degrees for any meal.

We had less than 24 hours in Savannah this time. We did enjoy the Moon River Brewpub. The barbeque comes from Angels and it was how I like it. The Wit (a Belgian style white ale) was excellent. I even drank a pint of their Light and liked it.

Although this sounds heretical on FT, when visiting Savannah, you will want to stay in a local B&B and not in a chain hotel in which you can accrue points. Savannah has many charming B&Bs so I hope you choose one. Savannah's many garden squares are the jewels of the city. What a blessing Savannah wasn't destroyed like Atlanta was during the Civil War. Have a wonderful time! :)

In Savannah:

45 South, 20 E. Broad Street. "gourmet Southern cuisine". Cozy, white table cloth establishment. Top notch service. Creative Southern/low country cuisine.

Nita's Place, 140 Abercorn Street. Being a Yankee, Nita's, IMO was very downhome southern cooking.

Wall's, 515 E. York Lane (between Oglethorpe Ave & York St) I LOVE BBQ and Wall's hit the spot. Easy to find if you follow the smoke.

Theoretically, since we can't talk about other FTers, one could click on a name and look for other posts by that person and backtrack to the offensive event. If one were so inclined. :)

Hmmm, been a couple years....
I do remember Sapphire Grill, which was very good. Excellent foi gras.
Wish I could remember the others as most were very good.

On Hilton Head, I enjoy:

- Santa Fe Cafe (has a nice outdoor roofdeck and great grouper)
- Redfish (excellent food, specialty is seafood, nice wine selection)
- Marley's (casual place, good seafood)

Unfortunately that doesn't really work when the allegedly "offensive" thread has been purged or when the banning is in response (or retaliation to) for something that happened weeks in the past (and is also purged).

FT seems to be undergoing one of its periodic waves of unexplained bannings for unexplained reasons. At present by my count, we have 1/3 of the non-moderator TalkBoard membership banned (oops, I mean the more PC "suspended" ) , one 5-year/5000+-post respected member obviously banned for complaining (in an appropriate forum) that a moderator claimed that reporting the offensive off-FT actions of the moderator to your own or the moderator's ISP as a violation of the ISPs' TOS is itself a violation of the FT TOS (i.e., FT TOS and FT moderator omnipotence extends outside FT and overrides ISP TOS), and one 3+ year/15000+-poster who always seemed quite level-headed and very helpful/informative to me banned. In addition, we have an original member who appears to have been permanently banned (6+ months banned) whose level-headedness, logic, and rational approach to problems are so legendary that she is mentioned in the FT glossary for those traits.

As I have said before, when these sort of members get banned, one wonders if it might be the banned members and not the authorities who have a better understanding of the TOS and spirit of FT. But as usual questioning the (usually benevolent) dictatorship of the moderators or questioning the legitimacy of what seem to be on the available information highly-questionable decisions, or even suggesting that it is possible for a moderator to have a bad day (let alone be corrupt) is forbidden and will lead to quick censorship and banning in an effort to squelch such dissent.

Yet the dissent and questioning will always continue underground. And general members will continue to lose respect for moderators and the moderation system, and not the banned members, when they see "suspended" appear under the name of well-known well-respected posters.
