Chattanooga Hotel Recommendations

We (from the UK) will be taking a road trip in the USA next May/June 2026. We are planning to visit Chattanooga from 23rd-26th May. We realise that this is the Memorial Day weekend, but it is coincidental to our trip. Can the Forum advise if there is any advantage or disadvantage to staying in Downtown Chattanooga or in the Hamilton Place area? Any recommendations for mid-priced hotels welcome.

Hamilton Place is just a big shopping mall. It doesn't offer anything you couldn't find in any suburban shopping area in most American cities. The only advantages I can think of is that the hotels there are more likely to have free parking and it is quick to get on I-75. If you are in Chattanooga for the Civil War history or the Tennessee Aquarium, the revitalized downtown is closer. I haven't been there recently and can't recommend any specific hotels, but all of the standard mid-range American hotels are there, e.g. Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Courtyard Marriott, etc. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can recommend one of the independent hotels that probably have more charm.

I posed your question to my sister-in-law who lives in the Chattanooga area and here's her response:

Downtown is walkable to everything. Food, the riverwalk area, the aquarium, everything. There are free shuttles up and down broad and market so you can get a free shuttle to – the incline railway from anywhere in the downtown, midtown or southside area. You can also take a free shuttle across the river to the north side area if you don’t want to walk. It’s divided into 3 sections – aquarium, midtown/downtown, and southside.

There are several museums in the downtown area, plus it’s getting a new baseball stadium and has a nice soccer stadium – all walkable or via free shuttle of downtown. There is a pinball museum, a children’s museum, an art museum. Towing museum, and other attractions. Plus you have the riverwalk areas, the riverboat and more.

The only reason to stay near Hamilton place – which is a 20 minute drive to downtown – is because it’s near the interstate and for people driving on i-75 to someplace else, it’s convenient. We hate the mall area to be honest. It’s horrible driving around there and you do have to drive if you are there.

Anyone wanting to explore Chattanooga – stay downtown. It’s convenient and central to the entire county if you want to go hiking someplace or go for a drive – it’s central to everything. Also starting in May June – there are free concerts in midtown (near miller park) every Friday night complete with food trucks. It’s a good time. The Sunday market is also really fun. There is a different theme every Sunday and food trucks cater to the theme, and there are bands that play there. It’s the biggest market in the area with a dedicated building. Saturdays over the summer there is a market in the aquarium plaza.

Hotel recommendations: We like to be in the midtown area because it’s walkable to both southside and aquarium/riverwalk. And there is an outdoor shopping/food area near there (in the area between the westin and the read house). You can walk to the choo choo from there and to the aquarium area both are about a 15 minute walk. And – if you don’t want to walk – a free shuttle stops by every 5 minutes heading both directions. We like Read House for history – and class and the pool tables in the bar area. it’s on the high end. We’ve also stayed budget at Hotel Bo (a days inn) which is a passion project of the guy who owns the Westin across the street. There is plenty of good food in this area. If you want to be closer to aquarium (with kids maybe) – Hampton Inn. Plenty of hotels near aquarium. If you want something funky – you can stay at the hotel at the Choo Choo which puts you in an old pullman car (near the south side).

Hope this helps. Oh – and I created a map of places recommended by the Chattanooga Times Free Press – for their Crash Course on Chattanooga Scavenger Hunt. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m....27898235&z=13 There are also adventure lab scavenger hunts that are available that teach about things like the Cherokee, civil war battlefields and murals. https://adventure.geocaching.com/ We have a cool small zoo – but I’m biased. LOL.

Thanks drseagrass, David & Jen. Downtown it is! The Hotel Bo looks fun and reasonably priced, albeit older in style. We're looking forward to our visit!

Two more quick follow ups from Jen:

Tell people if they like Whiskey – to tour Chattanooga Whiskey which has a store is near the Choo Choo/south side area. You can taste flights and do a tour. Seriously – their 91 whiskey is the delicious. Only type I drink nowadays unless I’m elsewhere. But – everywhere sells Chatt Whiskey. Same with the breweries. Hutton and Smith near UTC. My hubby likes their stuff.

Also – if they are doing the incline – they need to make reservations in advance.

If they have a car – and like historic amusement parks – a 15-minute drive gets them to Lake Winnie across the border in GA – which will be 101 years old next year. It should be open by May.

Please pass on our thanks to Jen. Yes, we're planning on visiting the incline and we both like amusement parks.

When I helped my daughter move from Atlanta back to Chicago a few years ago, we spent a night at the historic Read House Hotel in downtown Chattanooga. It was walking distance from several restaurants that we were interested in; we had a wonderful dinner at Easy Bistro & Bar. The next morning, before we hit the road driving north, we visited Lookout Mountain, which I highly recommend for the views and from where you can see seven states.

And while it is a bit touristy, the Ruby Falls at Lookout Mountain is pretty cool. A big waterfall in a cave. The trek there is interesting.

Update from Jen:

FYI – that map I sent you a link to. I’ve updated it. Times Free Press sent me a list of restaurants and specific dishes to try at them as well as outdoor activities that – I wouldn’t necessarily do, like hang gliding, but it’s stuff that you can do around here. Mostly – the food layer is what people will want.
