Charleston, SC - Family trip in late Jan?

Considering taking a family trip to Charleston but have no idea where we should stay. Any recommendations for a hotel within walking distance, or short cab ride, to family friendly activities? Have Marriott status so Marriott properties would be preferred, though I'm open to any if there are better local options.

How will weather be in Jan/Feb? I realize it won't be warm summer, just not sure if it'll be too cold to really enjoy at end of Jan.

Weather here in Charleston can be somewhat chili in late Jan/Feb. It can drop to very cold, although this is rare. Of course you may luck out and its nicer, upper 40's to low 50's. It very rarely gets to freezing and very rarely snows.
The Renaissance and Grand Bohemian are very close walking distance to all the main tourist areas in downtown. The other Marriott properties will require a short drive or cab ride, including the full service Marriott and Courtyard close to the water.

"Normal" weather in Jan./Feb. in Charleston should be highs in the 60 and lows in the 40s. So, in all likelihood, you'll have good weather for walking around Charleston. Please note that Charleston will be packed Feb. 14-16 for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, and hotels will be hard to obtain/expensive. You probably should check to see if any other big events are scheduled during your target times.
