FLL to Key West shuttle

Greetings FTers - I come seeking some localized knowledge (again). Looking for a trip to Key West on July 4th but:

1. EYW fared are high (Burj Jumeriah high)
2. MIA/FLL-EYW drive is not big money+time saver either (for my dates)

I was able to find a compromise where I am arriving into FLL and departing out of EYW. For the planned activities, i should be okay to stay without a car (for short 3 days). Question is - how do I get to EYW? There are some shuttles but I will be arriving close to 8pm and last shuttle departs at 8:30pm. Would that be cutting dangerously close? Any DPs or recent experience with shuttles would be much helpful.

In worst case, I can stay overnite at airport hotel and take shuttle for next day but it would be ideal if I can haul myself (and Mrs) to Keys on same day.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated.

About $21/person on Greyhound from Fort Lauderdale. Morning and afternoon departures. each requiring one transfer in Miami. Or, overnight in Miami, and take either of Greyhound's direct buses.

The Greyhound out of FLL can be a pain. A one way car rental is usually about the same cost as the shuttle ($80ish) and is the way to go. Just be aware of tolls. You'll be fine without a car, it's only 2x4 miles. Uber's and Taxi's are pretty pricey here though. Depending on where you stay, some hotels have shuttles to old town and the city runs a free hop on loop bus once there. Plus walking or renting a bicycle.
