6 days Florida, Myself 2 sons 13 and 14 and a Mustang Convertible

In Oktober I am taking my 2 sons to Miami where I rented a convertible and the plan is to drive north to Kennedy Space Center and South to Key west. I know I do not have a lot of time but this is a Dad / Sons trip where it is about the car, the drive and some cool stuff to see. My plan is to do a 2 day trip to and from KSC, a day in Miami to see the top things and a 2 day trip up and down to Key West. Looking for tips along the road for other things to see or to do and best places to stay to have a good balance in driving time and time to spend.

We arrive 19th end of the day from Amsterdam and fly out the 26th midday back to AMS.

Any tips would be appreciated!

South - In Islamorada - Robbies to feed the tarpon fish. Lunch or dinner at Lorelei's has a great view of Florida Bay.
Stopping and seeing (not feeding!) the key deer is cool. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/National_.../key_deer.html
I would go south first, as Fantasyfest weekend in Key West is that last weekend in October and it is crazy and rooms are expensive and hard to come by.
I would take Card Sound route into the keys. View from the bridge is spectacular.

North - Take A1A north. Lunch at Aruba's in Lauderdale by the Sea has a spectacular view.

Will add more later.

It's a pretty long drive from Kennedy Space Center to Key West, 7 hours and not a particularly pleasant one for over half of it. The drive down from the end of the mainland to Key West is 3 or so hours. One thing I would suggest here is the Ft. Jefferson ferry or seaplane, depending on your budget. It's a day trip to the most inaccessible national park, an old (by US standards) civil war era fort. It's 70 miles by water from Key West. Nice snorkling there. There's also the Mel Fisher Atocha treasure museum which is interesting. You can do a fishing charter. Many restaurants here will cook your catch. You can take a cattle car catamaran out to the reef to snorkle, which is better than nothing.

Wednesday: Stay in Miami
Thursday: Drive to Keywest. Stay somewhere on the way back already
Friday: Drive via Everglades back to Miami. Stay near Miami

Miami to Key West back part way in one day is a long day. Throw in a couple stops and it is even longer.
I would also make sure rooms are available along the way back. As I said, Fantasyfest is all consuming that last weekend and it starts in full that Thursday that you are planning on being there. Traffic will be bad. Restaurants packed.Full schedule here: https://fantasyfest.com/schedule/
And definitely not family friendly. A couple of Thursday highlights - Naughty bike ride, Halos and horns pool party complete with complimentary body painting, Body painting competition, toga party, etc.
Many of the hotels have night minimums, even further up the keys.
I would really consider going south first.

Why fly into Miami and have to go north and south?
Fly into Orlando, drive 1hr to Kennedy Space Center
Then go south to Miami and Key West.
When done, drive back to Miami and fly out.

Near KSC, stay at the Inn at Cocoa Beach.

Or do a one-way car rental, ending in Key West, and fly home from EYW.
